Celebrate!

The Library's 50th Birthday is Tomorrow

On Thursday, February 3, we will celebrate our wonderful library with a fun birthday party. The celebration includes student entertainment, opening gifts, and delicious cupcakes. If you would like to send a gift, but are like me and wait until the very last minute, you might want to consider a gift certificate from a bookstore or a check. A wish list can be viewed online at the Library Page. Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls has a special display of books from the wish list plus some great paperbacks. Books may also be ordered online at http://www.villagesquarebooks.com/grammar-school-library-50th-birthday-wishlist. I'll make sure that they are delivered to the library.

A big thanks to these cheerful bakers Ray, Alyson, Ann-Michele, Michelle, Heather, Jan, Victoria, Carlotta, and Carolyn who have volunteered to bake cupcakes for our celebration.

As always, we are grateful for the generous support you give to the library. If you have any questions, please contact me at school, home (869-1467), or by email [email protected]

Thanks,

Ponnie

OPEN HOUSE
WITH THE ANNIES THIS SATURDAY!

The Annies and their wonderful puppets will be center stage at our Winter Open House this Saturday, February 5 from 11am to 1:30pm. Especially designed for children from age 3 through grade 3, the event is free and open to the public and will include the Annies performance and lunch, followed by a puppet-making workshop.
This is a great opportunity to introduce prospective new families to The Grammar School. Please bring along a friend, neighbor, relative, or colleague with a child who would be a good candidate for our school. Visiting parents may meet and talk with teachers, learn about the application and financial aid process, and tour the campus.

See you on February 5!

Meg Lyons

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF:
We continue to support local families through monthly deliveries of non-perishable foods and toiletries. For the month of February, the second graders are in charge of collecting for this community service. As always, a box sits outside Tammy's office for this purpose.  THANK YOU EVERYONE!

The TGS Curriculum "Changing and Improving"

The TGS curriculum is available in a narrative form on both the TGS website and in hard copy from the Admission Office. This document is reviewed and revised each summer by the faculty. There are also curriculum maps used by the faculty, that outline in a grid (map) form, what is being taught at each grade level and in each subject area. These are reviewed periodically and are currently under review and revision by faculty in every subject area. The curriculum maps guarantee appropriate continuity and high quality content in our curriculum. The curriculum maps have been aligned to the Vermont Standards and Frameworks and Grade Level Expectations.

Currently all teachers of mathematics for K-8 are researching and analyzing a number of math programs. Using a variety of indicators and a research based format,  the committee is reviewing 4-6 different math series, including the one we currently use, Every Day Math from the University of Chicago. The committee is being chaired by Kathy Richardson, the 6, 7,and 8th grade mathematics teacher. Kathy has a Masters in Mathematics Education and is a graduate of the Vermont Math Institute.

All teachers of mathematics are also using the March Inservice Day for their review and research work with a goal of making a program (math series) recommendation to the Head of School and the Assistant Head of School for Curriculum, Linda Kosiba, by early spring. A final decision will be announced to the parent body.

The Education Committee of the Board of Trustees is now meeting monthly to discuss various curriculum and program areas. In a future Wednesday Newsletter the committee will report to the parent body about their work.

PSD at TGS equals XC skiing!  For the next three months, ALL TGS students need to haveXC skis, boots, and poles here. PSD days change as our schedule changes (we are on the Art Elective schedule for three more weeks in the upper school), so students and families need to look ahead and plan! Please have all of the equipment, including hats, mittens, coats, and ski pants.... even socks. Please come to school ready to participate in all aspects of our program.  We want everyone to be outside and active!  Thank you, Laurie

  From the Medieval Market Place:

Wait, what, is it October? No! You haven't slept through the school year - it is still the dead of winter, but we at the market place think it is the perfect time to start planning ahead. Next year we would like to return the market place to its crafty roots. We would love to put together people who want to help. This may mean coming together in workshops to make some wonderful things or it may mean working in groups through the spring and summer to make costumes to sell. We are open to ideas and looking for people who are excited about helping. Maybe you have some craft projects you have wanted to try or something you would like to learn to do, or maybe you just want to meet other parents. We would love to have you with us.

We will be meeting to discuss and plan the options Tuesday, Feb 15, in the library at 8:30. We will have coffee and muffins so you could come just for that.

If you need any information or have any questions please contact Julie Jensen 387-2513 or JaJa Laughlin 387-4287.

concertThanks to Jared Stolper for arranging this wonderful concert recently with House Blend pictured above and Moira Smiley with Voco. It was wonderful to have such a fine turnout for these great musicians and to celebrate the renovation of the TGS Theater. What a perfectly elegant and intimate concert space! Kudos to all who contributed to the theater renovation.

GREENWOOD DANCE

The Greenwood School invites all local students grades 6-8 to join us in our gym for a dance party on Friday, February 4. The dance is from 7:00 - 9:30. The cost is $5, and refreshments will be served. While we love for parents to attend, this is a fully chaperoned dance. Children are supervised by Greenwood faculty and staff and are required to be on premises at all times. We will have four or more Greenwood teachers on site at all times along with additional support from administrators throughout the evening. If students need to get some fresh air, they may step outside but must stay in a designated area close to the building. Please note that the dance will end promptly at 9:30.

To get to the gym, turn right at the Greenwood sign, follow the dirt drive staying right at the first intersection. You will then turn left at the dumpsters and go around the back of campus. Follow the sign (the next left turn) to the gym and then you will make one more left across from the red pod classrooms in the field. We hope to see you there!
