FROM THE DESK OF STEVE LORENZ
A Fully Enrolled School is a Healthy School
As we enter into a busy time in our admissions season we have certain classes that still have room for new students in our lower grades for the next school year. We endeavor to fill these classes to their optimum sizes. Small class sizes remain a priority, however we feel that having an optimum number of students provides other opportunities for meaningful class discussions, social interaction and grade level activities.
As we market The Grammar School to the general public, we ask you to suggest to friends and neighbors to pay us a visit on line or in person. You may want to consider hosting a coffee at your home for prospective families or bring a family to our February 5th open house. If you have suggestions for marketing this wonderful school, please give me a call or drop an e-mail. I will pass on your suggestions to our admissions office and to our marketing committee.
A fully enrolled school will help us to continue offering the level of high quality programs we have all come to expect and a fully enrolled school will help us to keep tuition increases to a minimum. * For a report on optimum and maximum class sizes go to the Parent Resources section on the TGS website, to the Head of School Page and scroll down the HOS Report to the Trustees for November.
Re-Enrollment Contracts 2011-2012
Re-Enrollment Contracts will be mailed to all of our current parents for the 2011-2012 school year. You will receive these in the first week of February and they will be due back to TGS on March 1. Of course we are hoping and planning that all of our current parents will be returning to TGS next school year. As we plan for the next school year it is very important to let me know if there is a possibility of your family not returning. If this may be the case, it is very important for us to have a conversation. If there are reasons that you not re-enrolling your student that I can be of help with please contact me.

PSD at TGS equals XC skiing! For the next three months, ALL TGS students need to haveXC skis, boots, and poles here. PSD days change as our schedule changes (we are on the Art Elective schedule for three more weeks in the upper school), so students and families need to look ahead and plan! Please have all of the equipment, including hats, mittens, coats, and ski pants.... even socks. Please come to school ready to participate in all aspects of our program. We want everyone to be outside and active! Thank you, Laurie

50th Birthday Celebration
Thursday, February 3rd
The Library will celebrate its 50th birthday next week with a fun event that is enjoyed by all. The entire school will crowd into the library to celebrate reading, books and our library with lively entertainment and gift opening. And since it's a birthday party, we end with yummy cupcakes.
If you would be willing to bake cupcakes for the celebration, please let me know. We will need about ten dozen. Thanks to Ray, Allison, Michelle, Heather, and Anne-Michele who have volunteered.
A library wish list was sent home with students. For a copy of the wish list, go to the Library Page, or pick one up in the library. Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls has a special display of books from the wish list as well as some additional paperbacks. Books also may be ordered online at http://www.villagesquarebooks.com/grammar-school-library-50th-birthday-wishlist, and I'll make sure that they are delivered to the library.
Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or if you will be able to bake cupcakes. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Ponnie

Once again The Annies will take center stage with the assistance of their wonderful, zany puppets at our Winter Open House - Saturday, February 5 from 11am to 1:30pm.
This event, especially designed for children age 3 through grade 3, is free and open to the public and will include the performance, lunch and (new this year!) a puppet-making workshop.
Please take this opportunity to introduce prospective new families to The Grammar School. We encourage you to bring along a friend, neighbor, relative, or colleague with a child who would be a good candidate for our school. Visiting parents can meet and talk with teachers, learn about the application and financial aid process, and tour the campus.

COMMUNITY NEWS
VERMONT ACADEMY is presenting a program with a lyric baritone (& piano) on Friday morning, Jan. 28th, our conference day. Area elementary school students are invited @ $2 per seat. It's a GREAT OPPORTUNITY to hear world class vocals.
Jeffrey Carr (brother of one of Vermont Academy's varsity soccer coaches) will be performing in Horowitz Hall at Vermont Academy on Friday morning (9:30am). Jeff is a lyric baritone and has performed in operas and musicals including: La Traviata, Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, and West Side Story. I know I'm biased, but he is an outstanding singer and this is an opportunity not to be missed (Elliott agrees)!
There will also a performance on Thursday night at 7:30pm which is open to the public. Jeff will be accompanied on the piano by renowned musician and conductor, Hugh Keelan.

BLUEBIRD ORCHESTRA - Saturday, January 29 at 7pm at Main Street Arts in Saxtons River Vermont.
After a triumphant debut at the Saxtons River Brew Pub last November, the Bluebird Orchestra returns to Saxtons River at 7 p.m. on Saturday January 29 for a concert at Main Street Arts.
Hatched from the same nest as 'The Bluebird Marionette Theatre' of Saxtons River, The Bluebird Orchestra draws it's influences from many diverse corners; from the Carter Family, to Kurt Weill, to Thelonious Monk, while always keeping one foot in traditional American roots music.
This ensemble of extremely talented and accomplished musicians features Donald Saaf on guitar and vocals, Matthew Sharff on the standup bass, Rick Contino on pedal steel and Paul McTaggart on drums. They all sing and play with gusto. They will be playing expanded songs from various puppet shows as well as new songs written by Saaf and Julia Zanes. Their songs are beautiful, sometimes sad, poignant and funny, and will delight and entertain any audience. Tickets for this concert are available at Main Street Arts, and reservations may be made by calling 802-869-2960. Admission is $8 for adults and $2 for children but no one should be discouraged by lack of funds.
