Communication, Communication, Communication

As they say,  "Communication is a two way street." However, at this moment, I would like to know if the flow of communication from The Grammar School to you is working well as a "one way street." In the past two years TGS has made a concerted effort to improve and expand our communication network. We have created a new website, electronic teacher pages, a revised Student and Parent Handbook, All School emails, an electronic Wednesday Newsletter, and more. I would like your feedback on these methods of communicating to you. I am particularly interested in the use of our website. How often do you use it? Can you find information readily? How can it be improved to better serve the current TGS population? I look forward to your candid responses in regards to the effectiveness of all of our communication tools. Please send me a note at slorenz@thegrammarschool.org.

Student and Parent Handbook

Periodically I will open myTGS Student and Parent Handbook, which I carry with me in my day planner, to review and reread certain sections. At times, I highlight certain sections of particular interest in the Wednesday Newsletter.

To get a sense of the fabric of "a day in the life of a student at TGS," or in fact "a year in the life of a student at TGS," I suggest you read or reread Section 2: DAILY LIFE AND THE SCHOOL YEAR, pages 10-21. You will find this quick read chock full of what makes The Grammar School a unique and strong learning community.

LAST CALL FOR FINANCIAL AID

APPLICATIONS FOR NEXT YEAR!

Families interested in applying for financial aid for the 2011-12 academic year should start getting organized now.  Planning ahead is key to ensuring that your application is complete, error free, and submitted on time.

If you are currently receiving aid, you should expect a packet of materials with instructions and application to arrive at your home this week.

If you are not receiving aid and would like to apply for next year, please pick up or request a copy of the instruction booklet and forms from Meg Lyons in the Admission Office.

As in the past, all applications for financial aid will be handled through the Admission Office in partnership with the School and Student Services by NAIS (SSS). This is a financial aid management service used by more than 2300 K-12 independent schools throughout the country to help assess a family's ability to pay school costs in a way that promotes objectivity, fairness, and consistency.

The timetable for financial aid this year is as follows:

December - Families receive SSS applications and instruction booklets, carefully review instructions, gather documents and start to complete paperwork.
January 5 - Last day to mail hard copy applications to SSS
January 15 - Last day to submit on-line applications to SSS
February - Financial Aid Committee reviews all applications
March 15 - Award letters sent to families

It's important to note that the application process for financial assistance is confidential. If you need help, please contact Meg Lyons in Admission or Deb Gray in the Business Office.
