The 7-8 soccer team played well at the Greenwood Tournament last weekend
FROM STEVE LORENZThe 7th-8th grade team played hard and with much enthusiasm over the weekend. Many team members were not available for three of the games on Saturday, and a cadre of 7th-8th graders and 8th grade goalie Jaime Lumley played heroically with only 9-10 players on the field. With some of our players returning from SSAT exams, the last game on Saturday was a tie with Compass School and the first game on Sunday was a win over the same team. The TGS team played strong and aggressively in the final game for third place against Hilltop, losing in overtime and gaining the fourth place trophy. Thanks to all of our players for a spirited season, to 7th-8th coach Chris Harlow, and to parents Bruce McIntosh, Mike Foster, and Mark Silbey for taking over the coaching duties for the tournament.
IMPORTANT DATE/CALENDAR CHANGES!
PLEASE NOTE
Thursday, December 16, will be a half day and the last day of school before the Holiday Break. Friday, December 17, there will be no school. This is a change to the original calendar, due to a switch in location of the 50th Anniversary Founders Dinner to the TGS campus. We will need Friday to prepare for the event. Thank you for your understanding and our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.**Also looking further ahead: The January Parent Conferences will be held on January 28, not January 14.

This training day will run from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. These are practical emergency and life saving skills for our faculty and staff. Whether we are at school or off campus, with the amount of time we are out of the building on field trips, during PSD etc., this is an important training for the faculty and staff to ensure the safety and well being of all our community members. TGS Nurse Consultant Sara Dunbar will lead the training.Wishing our Community a Happy and Healthy Holiday The TGS faculty and staff give thanks for all our school community members: students, parents, grandparents, staff, faculty, friends, and neighbors.Steve Lorenz, Head of School

FRENCH WEEK AT TGS
Paris as constructed by the kindergarten, 1st, 5th, and 6th grades
TGS observed National French week in early November. French teacher Johanna Gardner planned the events and collaborated with art teacher William Chambers on several group projects. To kick off the celebration of French language and culture, students from TGS and Green Street met at Crowell Lot park in Brattleboro to eat lunch together, play games, and dance the Hokey Pokey in French. After a couple of hours in the sunny park, students broke into groups combining kids from both schools and walked to Green Street school to share more activities in the classroom. When asked which outdoor games were the favorite, the common responses from the students were, "Both of them," and, "This is FUN."
Other activities honoring French week at The Grammar School included: preschool dances; kindergarten songs and games; a 1st grade play, Le Petit chien se trouve un ami; 2nd grade stories; 3rd grade French interviews; letters to penpals in Montreal for 4th-7th graders; and a movie and crepe night for 5-8th graders. For the culminating event of French week, Keith Murphy returned for a second year to present a mix of French Canadian and English music and dance for the TGS community.
A related art project involved a scale model of Paris. The kindergartners and first graders constructed different businesses that one might find in Paris, while the fifth and sixth graders worked in small groups to create significant monuments of the city. At an all school assembly students placed the buildings in their proper locations along a blue tissue paper River Seine. William noted that most of the monuments were built to a scale of 1cm = 1m. Students constructed the models out of pizza boxes with found objects for the details, and then added paint and lights. The models are currently on display in the Dorothy Richardson Gallery in the Lower School.
Both Johanna and William commented that the entire week was a great success, and they are eager to come up with new ideas for next year. HISTORY FAIR - 6th graders researched and played the parts of famous Vermonters in history this morning. "Peter Shumlin" greeted people as they entered the gym.
