WASTE-FREE LUNCH - TGS students and staff will be celebrating what we hope will be the first of many waste-free lunches, (e.g. reusable containers vs. single-use packaging) on Tuesday, November 2

The idea behind the waste-free lunch is to eliminate all the food packaging for that day's lunch as a way of reducing what we send to the landfill each week. TGS throws away about 12 pounds of non-recyclable, non-compostable trash at workjobs each day. The majority of this waste is food packaging from the day's snacks and lunches. Our composting partnership allows us to reduce our landfill waste by composting paper products and food waste, among other things.

The topic of packaging and waste-free lunch will be discussed in classrooms. For more information, please visit www.wastefreelunches.org

Please help us to celebrate a truly waste-free lunch on November 2!

FROM THE DESK OF STEVE LORENZ

Governance of TGS
My report to the Trustees this month speaks to three areas that may be of interest to our parent body. Many of our parents have asked about the "Governance Model" of the school and how our Trustees fit into the model. The Governance Model is in our current Student and Parent Handbook and can be found in detail in my report to the Trustees at my HOS page, which is linked from the Parent Resources Page on our website. The governance of TGS has three tiers: Decisions exclusive to the Trustees; decisions in partnership with the Head of School and decisions exclusive to the Head of School.

Enrollment, Class Sizes and Admissions
I am often asked what are the maximum class sizes, what does a fully enrolled school mean in terms of numbers of students and what is the admissions process when accepting new students? In 2006, I provided the Trustees with a report answering these questions. If you are interested this report is on my HOS page this month as part of my report to the trustees.

HOS Goals for 2010-2011
Each year in concert with the Trustees I establish goals for myself. These goals usually relate to the needs of the school and school community. This year my goals focus on: our 50th Anniversary, connecting with alums and former parents, supporting the development office, advancing physical accessibility projects, and supporting new faculty and faculty in new teaching positions. The full text of my goals is also on my HOS page on our web site.
