December Crafts
December crafts are a tradition at TGS. For those of you who are new to the school, the craft groups consisted of mixed age groups of students working on a craft for four or more class periods. This year, these activities will have a different look, in that there will be two classes in which the history, culture and geography of two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, will be discussed at each grade level and then four classes of hands on activities will take place, once again with students in mixed age groups.
Thus, the faculty has decided to engage the whole school in an intensive study of Afghanistan and Pakistan which began yesterday, December 1st.  To this end, our "crafts" will have a decided focus and be inspired by the culture and people of this region of the world.
Parents, please consider sharing any knowledge, interest, or item from this area with your child and with us.  Given the constant focus on these two countries in the news, mostly painful and negative, we would like to see our students gain an awareness and appreciation of the people, history and culture of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

TGS's "Secret Santa" - Exchange drawing will be this Friday, December 4.  Then, the secretive fun begins Monday, December 7 and runs through Friday, December 18.  During this time, all TGS students and the faculty/staff (minus the pre-school) will each have the name of the person for whom he or she is a Secret Santa.  Notes with hints and clues are exchanged (but no Secret Santa identities revealed, so don't tell anyone whose name you drew) with little surprises (a chocolate kiss or a small candy cane) intermixed with cards, for the next 9 days .  Everyone brings a little final gift for the person he or she has tantalized for two weeks!  These final gifts should be small (no more that $6 should be spent) and should be brought to TGS by Wednesday, December 16, WRAPPED AND MARKED WITH BOTH TO AND FROM NAMES. so they can be checked off on the master list.  On the last day of school, during our holiday skit, gifts are handed out to everyone and we find out who has been sending us the anonymous notes.
This year, in addition to the Secret Santa gift, we are asking that all participants also bring in a non-perishable food item for the Putney Food Shelf when they bring in their final gift.  This way, we are celebrating our small community at TGS and helping the larger community celebrate as well.  Questions?  E-mail Laurie ( lfichter@thegrammarschool.org ). Enjoy the creativity and secrecy of our activity.

Green News: Please watch this spot in upcoming Wednesday notices for reports of environmental studies at TGS, what we're doing as a school to lessen our impact on the environment, and tips for how you can do the same.  Currently, the faculty-based green committee is compiling a list of resources for use by other teachers in their classrooms.  All classes will undertake some environment-related studies this year, and will be sharing their studies with the rest of the school.

'Tis the Season for Financial Aid Forms
Current families interested in applying for financial aid for the 2010-11 academic year should start the process now.  Planning ahead is key to ensuring that your application is complete, error free and submitted on time.

As in the past all applications for financial aid will be handled through the Admission Office in partnership with the School and Student Service for Financial Aid  (SSS) of the National Association of Independent Schools.  School and Student Services is a comprehensive financial aid management service used by more than 2,300 K-12 schools across the country to help assess a family's ability to pay school costs in a way that promotes objectivity, fairness and consistency.

The process for applying for financial aid at TGS includes the following steps:

1.  Parents of returning students should submit their SSS form no later than January 15, 2010.  The form is available on line at www.nais.org.  Or, if you prefer, pick up or request a hard copy of the SSS instruction booklet and forms from Meg Lyons in the Admissions Office.

2.  The Financial Aid Committee begins to meet in February and will inform applicants of awards by March 15.

It's important to note that the application process for financial assistance is confidential and separate from the re-enrollment process.  If you need help completing the forms, please contact Deb Gray in the TGS business office.

What is BKL? BKL, is a child based cross-country ski program for 5-14 year olds that encourages kids to have fun on skis while improving skills, playing games, and touring trails with friends and family. It is a "learn by doing" program that is designed to teach each child to participate to the best of his or her respective ability, whether racing or playing games. It is a program whose philosophy is that success is defined by effort, not victory.
As 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist Bill Koch said,

"By exposing our children to cross-country skiing
we can help build in them a love of
health, sport, nature, winter, and freedom.
Free the heel
and the mind will follow."
