Steve & Hamza Abadi, Head of School for the day

At last year's Spring Event, during the live auction, Hamza's family bid on and won for him the honor of being Head of School for the Day. Hamza's day consisted of participating in several important meetings in which he shared his views on marketing, admissions, the format of the Wednesday Notice and more. Hamza also visited classes, conducted all school meeting and had lunch with one of The Grammar School's co-founders, Dottie Richardson. At the end of the day, Hamza was heard to say, "This was the best day of my life". Thank you Hamza, I had a really great day as well.

'Tis the Season to Give Thanks

Dear Grammar School Community,
'Tis the season to give thanks. The Grammar School presents us with many reasons to give thanks. Let us give thanks for a school that brings out the best in each student. Let us give thanks for a school that integrates challenging academics with engagement in the arts and the outdoors. Let us give thanks for a school where education begins through discovery. Let us give thanks for a school that values the imagination and enthusiasm of children. Let us give thanks for a school that fosters acceptance of each student's uniqueness and strengths. Let us give thanks for a school that graduates confident, resilient, and independent young people.
Most importantly, let us give thanks for an outstanding faculty and staff, a caring and supportive parent and grandparent body, and of course for the gift of our students, your children. Wishing all you a very happy, healthy and safe holiday.

Best,
Steve Lorenz

TGS Board of Trustees Update -The Grammar School Board of Trustees gathered for their November meeting on Tuesday the 17th.
Auditors Pieciak & Company presented their annual independent review of TGS' finances to the board noting that all was in order and proceeding as it should with appropriate checks and balances.  They also commented on the fact that our fundraising has held steady or increased slightly and that this has not been the case with other nonprofits they have been working with as of late.
Several members of the TGS Board and Administration attended a professional development conference hosted by the NH Center for Nonprofits in October titled "Building a Board Fearless in Fundraising".  They provided an overview of information gathered and discussed ways in which it could apply to the TGS model.  Guests Regina Rockefeller and Lyedie Geer attended this section of the meeting and shared their experience in the areas of private school boards, celebrations and fundraising.
Members of the board also discussed The Grammar School's upcoming 50th Anniversary and events and celebrations currently being planned.
On the topic of how TGS communicates with parents, students and friends the possibility of creating some Teacher's Page guidelines was discussed as well as the development of a monthly Head of School letter.
The usual business of reviewing administrative reports and planning for the all-important meeting on next year's budget were also discussed.

Time for Thanks from the Library
- A big thank you to everyone who has helped the library this year.  Thank you for supporting the Book Fair, where we sold $2555.39 worth of books, which earned $725.00 in books and $276.35 in cash profit for the library.   Another thank you goes to all of you who have volunteered in the library, especially Karen, Emily and Laura.  Finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to the parents who encourage reading, checking out books and returning them.  It would not happen without you.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Ponnie

ANNUAL FUND RAFFLE!

By now I hope you have received the annual appeal. We hope that every family contributes as we aim for 100% parent participation. TGS has always had a strong showing of parent support, often as high as 90%, which is significantly higher than the norm for schools of our size in our region (according to NAIS statistics). Such a strong showing sends a clear message to other donors that TGS is supported by all members of the community. High levels of support also help with foundation funding as participation rates are often one of the first indicators examined when grantors consider a proposal. I am pleased to report that we have raised nearly $25,000 in gifts and pledges towards our goal of $85,000. You may give a gift on-line, by mail or drop off a check to Tammy. You may also pledge any amount to be paid by June 30th, 2010.
The annual fund is a critical component of the TGS budget. Without our annual fund, tuition would be significantly higher. In essence, ALL TGS families receive a "silent scholarship" as tuition alone does not cover the true cost of TGS education.
The RAFFLE for a new kayak or snowboard is off to a roaring start as many donors have met the challenge by either increasing their gift by a minimum of $50 or giving a new gift of $50 to be eligible. The raffle ends December 31st and the winner will be drawn at the first all-school meeting in January of 2010. A student will be selected to pull the winner from a basket of names. A PLEDGE meeting the raffle requirements will also be eligible!
   Thank you for your support!

GIVING BACK AT THANKSGIVING

Students at The Grammar School gathered this week to fill Thanksgiving baskets with holiday fare for Putney Family Services. Children donated Thanksgiving essentials, including pie filling and crust, cranberries, squash, sweet potatoes, nuts, and oranges, and also made cards to decorate the baskets. This was one of a series of community service activities here at school that help raise student awareness about those who are less fortunate.

Putney Food Shelf: THANK YOU FOR THE GENEROUS GIVING THIS FALL. For the month of November the kindergarten and fifth grade classes are collecting non-perishable items. Boxes are in these two classrooms, and there is a box in the main office hallway for those who wish to make donations.

Bill Koch Ski League cross-country ski program - will be held at TGS on Wednesdays and Grafton Ponds on Thursdays, starting in January.
What is BKL? BKL, is a child based cross-country ski program for 5-14 year olds that encourages kids to have fun on skis while improving skills, playing games, and touring trails with friends and family. It is a "learn by doing" program that is designed to teach each child to participate to the best of his or her respective ability, whether racing or playing games. It is a program whose philosophy is that success is defined by effort, not victory.
As 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist Bill Koch said,

"By exposing our children to cross-country skiing
we can help build in them a love of
health, sport, nature, winter, and freedom.
Free the heel
and the mind will follow."
