From the Desk of Steve Lorenz
The Flu
As of Tuesday, November 10 we have thirty two students (30% of our population) absent and three faculty / staff absent. This number has fluctuated  between twenty and thirty students over the past two weeks. The reasons for children being sick vary but most are flu like symptoms. Our plan, as of today, is to keep moving forward and doing business as usual. However, if the numbers continue to escalate and reach the 50% of our population mark we will consider closing for a day or two. You will receive advance notice.  As you know, the vaccine is still sparse and we have not been able to access it. We will keep you informed as we hear from our Nurse Consultant and the Vermont Department of Health. If you have questions or concerns, please let us know. Right now we are taking this day by day.

Head LIce

On another note we have had three cases of head lice that we know of last week in fifth grade. Please find below our policy / protocol in regards to students with head lice. They are very specific as to notification, treatment, and coming back to school.  Please review.

Head Lice - No Nit Rule, Treatment, Notification Etc.
The school has a "no nit" policy that requires careful comb out with a special comb and prohibits students from returning until a no-nit condition is obtained. Parents are expected to check for head lice prior to the opening of school in September. There is also an all-school check during school hours at the beginning of the school year. Parents need to inform the school of head lice in the family and are responsible for eradicating the problem before bringing their child back to school. It is the parents' responsibility to be vigilant throughout the year in identifying and treating head lice. During a period when head lice are prevalent, the teachers will check all children as often as seems necessary. Children with evidence of lice will be sent home for the necessary treatment. Parents should inform the school if they discover lice on their children, so that other children in the class can be checked.
If your child has had a case of head lice and has returned to school or has been in direct contact with other children at sleepovers, parties, etc., please remember to consider other families and notify us and your children's friends.

Thank you,
Steve Lorenz, Head of School

TGS Social Skills Teachers Offer Evening Chats with Parents
Patty Stickney and Chris Danforth, social skills teachers, are interested in having a monthly fireside chat, possibly without the fire, to meet and talk with parents about any topics they would deem valuable. We have experience in fields such as parenting, normal developmental expectations, brain development in teens, depression, anxiety, stress and stress management, ADHD and different learning styles and their impact on the child, how to communicate effectively with children, and raising children in today's culture.
Some ideas: we can meet once a month informally, we can meet with a specific theme driven by parents' requests, we could read a book on children and or teens and discuss (there are many, many wonderful books), or any other ideas you may have. If parents are interested or have specific themes or topics they would like us to cover, please contact Chris at chris@parksplacevt.org or Patty at pstick54@gmail.com.

The eighth grade has had to postpone the Dessert Theater until Thursday, DECEMBER 3!
The flu has taken its toll, but rehearsals will resume and healthy bakers will create delicious goods to be auctioned off to benefit the eighth grade field trip fund. Come and watch "The Liberated Cinderella" and eat yummy desserts.  Then, bid to purchase delectable cakes, pies and fudge. Thank you for putting it on your calendars. It is a great night for all ages.  Laurie

Muralist Terry Sylvester comes to The Grammar School
- She will be at The Grammar School from Nov 18th to Nov 24th and hopes to work with every child in the school.  The children will create four murals that will be placed on the campus.

Terry Sylvester is an artist who lives and works in Vermont. She is a professional scenic artist who makes scenery for movies in New York City and around New England. She has done large-scale mural project residencies in Vermont Schools for many years and is a certified K-12 art teacher. Her work can be seen in the Brattleboro community at the Main St. Post Office, the lobby of the Paramount building, and most prominently in the historical mural of Brattleboro in the middle of town. (Taken from the Vermont Arts Council Website)
Terry will be based in the science room at The Upper School and hopes that you will stop by throughout the week to check-in on the progress of the murals.

Visiting Artist Andrea Stix Wasserman - comes to The Grammar School to work with the Kindergarten and First Graders Wednesday and Thursday, November 11th and 12th. She will give a special All School Meeting presentation on Wednesday at 12:50.
Andrea is a sculpture who lives and works in Vershire, Vermont. She has a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Her residencies relate to Vermont's rural landscape, encouraging students to acquire a deeper understanding of both their environment and art. By exploring ecology and ecosystems, students learn to pose scientific questions that can be expressed through the making of art. (Taken from the Vermont Arts Council Website)
These artists' visits are funded by our grant from the Clowes Foundation.
Yours,
William

Thanksgiving baskets - The Grammar School will continue its tradition this year of contributing Thanksgiving baskets to the food shelf at Putney Family Services. Each class has been assigned an item, so look for faculty home notes that will include the particular item your family is asked to contribute.  At all school meeting on November 18th, buddies will fill and decorate each basket.

Putney Food Shelf: THANK YOU FOR THE GENEROUS GIVING THIS FALL. For the month of November the kindergarten and fifth grade classes are collecting non-perishable items. Boxes are in these two classrooms, and there is a box in the main office hallway for those who wish to make donations.

WWCC Annual Soup Sale -
Each year a group of us make and sell soup and bread to visitors on the Putney Craft Tour.  This will take place at the Westminster West Congregational Church in Westminster West on November 27th and 28th.  We are seeking donations of soup and baked goods for this annual soup sale.  If you can lend a crock-pot to help with the soup serving process it would be much appreciated.
We are also seeking workers to help out during the soup sale on Friday and Saturday.  Contact Kathy Richardson or Nick Keil to let us know how you can help.
Proceeds from the sale go to help support the church and its efforts to care for our neighbors in need.  Please help to spread the word and come join us for a wonderful meal and help make this event a success.
·      Drop off food on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27 or SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28 between 9 am and 11 am at the Westminster West Congregational Church.
·      Label all pots, pans, plates, crockpots, ladles, etc.
·      Include a note indicating the kind of soup or baked good with a list of ingredients, for our dairy/gluten/nut/etc. sensitive friends.
We would like to put together a WWCC Soup Sale Cookbook and have begun to collect recipes.  If you are willing to have your soup recipe included, please bring it with you when you drop off your soup.
Many thanks in advance for your donation and help.
