TGS 5-6 Soccer Team Wins Sportsmanship Award! At
the annual Putney Recreation League soccer tournament this past
weekend, soccer officials, coaches, and tournament organizers voted to
present the Tournament Sportsmanship Award to our 5th- 6th grade TGS
team for its consistent display of outstanding sportsmanship throughout
those two days.
Coach Ken Brautigam described several examples
of sportsmanship among TGS students. Among other gestures of goodwill,
they cheered for all players who exhibited good soccer skills, and they
played politely and fairly, even when players on the opposing team did
not. When one of their competitors could only put nine players on the
field, The Grammar School responded by playing a team of nine, as well. Brautigam
said, "I am extremely proud of these boys and girls. In my opinion, to
win this award, to have impressed coaches and officials alike with
their team effort and attitude, means more than any championship honor.
This is not an individual achievement; it is a team recognition, and it
confirms that our 5th and 6th graders really are living up to high
standards on the playing field, standards that go well beyond skill and
technique, strength and endurance, and soccer ability."
Communication-Head of School Web Page - In an effort to continue our work of community building and communicating the needs of the school to our parent body, I am creating a Head of School Page to be located on the Web Site in the Parent Resources section. This page will contain my monthly Head of School Report to the trustees and may contain other communications past and present. The page will be refreshed at the minimum, monthly. Mary Heller Osgood, TGS Director of Communications, will assist me in setting up the page and keeping it current. It is not a blog. As in the past I urge you to call me if you are looking for immediate contact and certainly e-mail if a message is less urgent.

Student and Parent Handbook Focus - This week I have chosen to highlight the section of the TGS handbook focusing on parents as partners. As our Mission states, "As a small community of parents, students, and teachers in conscious partnership..." At TGS we strive to work closely with parents to provide "students with an excellent academic, artistic, athletic, and ethical foundation."
SECTION 3: PARENTS AS PARTNERS
General Parent Support At TGS, we depend on volunteerism and parent participation. The Grammar School is able to offer a program with extra life and vitality because of our parents' interest in, and support of, our educational goals. Coaching sports, chaperoning field trips, assisting in the ski programs, helping in the library, offering presentations, working on special classroom projects, creating costumes for plays, and coordinating fundraising events are just a few of the ways parents contribute to their children's education each year. Because parents are so vital to the success of their children's education, parental involvement in the school is crucial.
Volunteer Opportunities Parent Committees Currently, there is no formal Parent Association at TGS, but traditionally each year a parent or group of parents volunteers to coordinate and undertake tasks necessary to fulfilling fundraising needs, providing support for open houses and other small promotional events, and providing food for social events, such as concerts. There are a number of committees in which parents can participate including, but not limited to: Building and Grounds; Medieval Faire; Spring Fundraising Event. A list is circulated to parents in the July summer information packet asking them to signify their interest in serving on one or more committees.
Class Parents Each class has at least one designated parent to whom the teacher can turn for extra help. This can mean coordinating drivers for field trips, helping the teacher on all-school clean up days, organizing classroom fundraisers, and generally being a liaison between the classroom and the school community at large. At the end of each school year, the Director of Admission seeks out parents to serve as class parents for the following year. Coaching Sports In the fall, TGS fields soccer teams at the 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade levels, and offers a K-1st-2nd soccer activity. In addition, TGS has a cross-country running team for ages 6 and up. Parents interested in coaching or assisting should contact the athletic director or after-school sports coordinator. The winter off-campus ski program depends on parent chaperones for its success. Currently, TGS does not have a spring sports program but parents often organize after-school games and other sporting activities. Class Trips Class trips are an integral part of the curriculum. Generally parents are called upon to assist with transportation needs. Throughout the year, students in all grades can expect to take two full-day field trips connected with classroom studies. In addition, local trips (i.e. to ponds and streams, to libraries, to historic or work sites) may be scheduled as appropriate, depending on the balance between curricular needs of the class and respect for other scheduled subjects.
Overnight trips may be a part of the students' curriculum. Overnight and longer trips are generally funded through activity fees that are delineated on tuition bills. Major trips, like those to Quebec or Washington, D.C. are planned well in advance.
Trips that take place during school days contribute to curriculum goals and are previewed, planned, and led by the teacher. Class trips for pleasure usually occur at the close of the year.
Steve Lorenz, HOS"Do you know how we at The Grammar School keep our children warm?" Would you believe that years ago, each classroom had a woodstove and that workjobs included carrying wood to each classroom? Each teacher was responsible for keeping their woodstove burning. (you can still see the flue holes in some of the classroom ceilings) While we do use an oil furnace as a back up (on average burning about 6000 gallons of oil) our primary source of heating comes from a woodchip burning furnace. Built 14 years ago thanks to the Allard Family, donations and a Department of Energy grant, the furnace has operated smoothly and efficiently since that time. Each heating season the Allards gift TGS countless loads of woodchips from Allard Lumber at a tremendous savings to the School, allowing TGS to lower its dependence on oil heat.
We thank the Allard Family for keeping us warm!
