NEWS FROM STEVE - Student and Parent Handbook Focus - This week I would like to focus on portions of two sections of our Student and Parent Handbook. The two sections are Daily LIfe at TGS and School Culture. The portions highlighted below are essential aspects of our school community. As you may know the "handbook" was distributed in hard copy and is available on our website.
All-School Meeting Students, faculty, and staff meet together once a week for approximately half an hour for announcements, presentations, plays, and celebration of the week's birthdays. Speakers, special events, and talent or variety shows also occur at all-school meetings. Parents are invited to join us at any of these meetings. The meetings are held on Wednesdays from 12:50 pm-1:30 pm.
Workjobs Starting in grade 4, all students at TGS participate in "workjobs" to help keep the school clean and to provide other services vital to the daily operations of the school. Students work in mixed-age teams under teacher supervision to sweep, vacuum, dust, take out trash, or help on the playground with younger students, work in the preschool etc. Workjob assignments change about every six weeks. Workjobs occur from 12:30 pm-12:45 pm each day!
Buddy Program A "buddy" program links students across the grades in yearlong partnerships. Buddies (mixed-age groups of two or three) meet regularly for activities including: reading together, writing funny poetry, working on art projects, or assembling donations to community organizations. Buddy activities are scheduled on a monthly basis with big and little buddies checking in with each other quite often during the course of a school day or school week.
Community Service Service to the larger community is a part of each classroom, and ranges from collecting donations for food shelves, to fundraising for local and global humanitarian organizations, to visiting with nearby senior citizens. Each class completes at least one community service project during the course of the year. There is currently a committee of faculty and staff working on three TGS Strategic Plan goals in regards to community service at TGS. The progress of this committee will be reported on in the near future.

SPORTS!
Please check the Sports Calendar on The Grammar School Sports Page for the latest schedule. The Grammar School hosted the 10th annual TGS Invitational XC running meet on Wednesday, October 14, on a rolling course that wound around the fields and through the woods near the school. 58 students from The Grammar School, Putney Central School, BAMS, Academy School, and Reading Elementary competed in the mile and 1.5 mile races. Seven of them had so much fun running the mile course that as soon as they crossed the finish line they lined up to run the second race. The Reading team took the first two places in the girls' mile, led by Abby Kaija from Reading in 6:31, Lindsay Appleton in 7:05, and followed by Aaliyah Jacobs from Academy School in 7:15. In the boys' race, Russell Boswell from TGS sprinted to the line to win in 6:21, just one second ahead of second place finisher Matt Dulmaine from Academy. Third place in the boys' mile was Justin Wheeler in 6:53, also from Academy. 20 runners competed in the two-lap 1.5-mile race. TGS runners Victoria Jaenson and Erin Sternfels took the top two places for the girls in 11:40 and 11:43, followed by Gabi Sigda from BAMS in 11:58. For the boys, Sebbi Wu from TGS took first place by a comfortable margin in 9:33, with BAMS runners Austin Lester in second in 10:07 and Josh Parro in third in 10:10. Team awards in the one-mile race went to the Reading girls and The Grammar School boys, while TGS girls and the BAMS boys won the 1.5-mile trophies. As Reading coach Lisa Kaija noted, "It is always one of our favorite afternoons in the fall. A TGS race runs like a well-oiled machine!"
