SWINE FLU - is currently big news around the world and you have probably all been paying some kind of attention to the news.  We have emailed faculty to remind students about the importance of thorough hand washing along with covering mouth and nose during sneezing and coughing.  We all know how many times we have ALL heard these precautions, but it never hurts to repeat them.  PLEASE, heed the warnings to keep sick children home from school and be mindful of the current news about this virus. We are including websites for the Centers for Disease Control and the Vermont Health Dept. should any of you wish to check further into this current outbreak. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/, http://healthvermont.gov/panflu/SwineFlu.aspx
TGS is following the following recommendations from the VT Department of Heath and National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) regarding the current outbreak of Swine Flu.

The VT Department of Heath recommends  the following procedures to help prevent the spread of germs:

Wash your hands often and well.
Use alcohol-based hand wipes and gel sanitizers if soap and water are not available.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away.
Stay home from work or school and away from others if you are sick.
If you need medical attention, call your health care provider first.

We will be reminding students of these recommendations at school.

TGS guidelines recommend keeping your child home if: he or she has a fever or has vomited the previous night, and ask that you consider keeping your child home if: he or she is coming down with a cold, is complaining of nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, or has had a fever within the past 24 hours.  We ask you to be particularly considerate of these recommendations given the current situation.

DEAR TGS COMMUNITY:

Each year The Grammar School Board of Trustees appeals to our community for possible candidates to serve on the Board.  We rely on you to suggest individuals within our immediate and the greater community whom you believe would bring specific skills, resources, and interest to the Board or one of its committees.

Do you know of someone who has expertise or professional experience who would be helpful in serving on one of our committees?  Do you know individuals who have the capacity to attract new resources to the school?

Submitting the name of someone does not require that you contact them or commit them to serve.  The Committee on Trustees will consider your suggestion and inquire if the person is interested.

Please reflect a moment on whether you know someone with special talents and enthusiasm who might be interested in being involved at TGS.  Forward your suggestions to any COT member (listed below) either by phone or email.  For more information, contact Marjorie Ray or refer to the trusteeship article on TGS Underground.

From the Committee on Trustees,
Liz Olmsted, Ponnie Derby, Marcia Leader and Marjorie Ray

A seven week beginners knitting program that will take us through the rest of the school year.   We will make our own knitting needles and dye some yarn as well as learn the basics of casting on, knitting, purling, casting off and stitching a project together. Students will spend the first 6 weeks making their first project (either a set of bean bags or a crazy scarf). And then begin a second project to continue with on their own.

All materials will be provided; yarn, needles, laminated knitting instructions, and a variety of knitting projects appropriate for the young beginner.   An afternoon snack will also be provided.

Come one, Come all!  Strolling of the Heifers Committee Asks Everyone to "Save the Date" A few cow-minded individuals have gotten together to plan for this year's Strolling of the Heifers parade in downtown Brattleboro.  We are asking that families in all grades save the date of June 6th for participation in the parade.  Come show your support for TGS!  We will make cool cow t-shirts to wear and plan to march with giant marionettes (dressed for the occasion, of cow-rse).  We need students (and parents) young and old!  We are also looking for someone to volunteer some sort of hay wagon (no motors) for the little ones to ride on if they tire out.  More people are also needed to plan and/or help with resources.  If you are willing to help and/or if you plan to march with us, please contact Ray Hutchins (parent of Lyle in K) or Darcy Gibney, Kindergarten teacher!

COMMUNITY NEWS!
TYLER HARLOW UPDATE! - Hello friends and family, just happened across a local library and wanted to
update everyone on progress, and sound like a broken record by telling you all how amazing you are! Every day there is someone new who has decided to give to this cause and that really inspires me to keep going day in and out. So, again to all of you who have donated, (some twice!!) and to all of you who have advocated for this cause, I thank you. As for me, I am currently west of  Pittsburg, PA about 15 miles from the border of Ohio. The trip has gone very well so for, and I have met some really kind and generous  people along the way. This trip is showing to me how ordinary people can really do
extraordinary things on a day to day basis, and with out them and you it would make this trip a difficult task as opposed to a great challenge. I hope you are all well and help me to continue spreading the word about this
cause!! All the best, Tyler Harlow
