Dear TGS Community,

Marcia Leader, our current Director of Admission/Financial Aid/Marketing will be retiring on June 30, 2009. After many years of service to our school community as a parent, teacher, nurse and Director of Admission, Marcia will be seeking the "good life" reading, playing tennis and golf, traveling, spending time with her grandchildren etc... . There will be time before the school year ends to celebrate Marcia's tenure here at The Grammar School in the proper fashion.  In the meantime a search committee, comprised of parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and myself will commence a search immediately. Please find information in regards to the job description and job requirements below. The Grammar School will be advertising locally, regionally and nationally to fill this key administrative staff position. In addition to the Wednesday Newsletter and the national Schoolspring service, this position will be advertised or publicized in four daily newspapers, listed on the regional ISANNE List Serve and other list serves.

The Director of Admission/Financial Aid/Marketing is a position that is integral to the success and survival of our school. The members of this very important committee take the responsibility of hiring for this position very seriously. The members are: Linda Kosiba (faculty member, assistant head of school for curriculum development and admission committee member), Eve McDermott (faculty member, assistant head of school for professional development and admission committee member), Deb Gray (Business Manager), Mark Green (Director of Development), Sarah Messenger (parent, trustee, member of marketing committee), JoNell Hamilton (parent, trustee, chair of parent survey committee) and Steve Lorenz, Head of School. The Grammar School, an independent prek-8th grade day school in Putney, VT, seeks a highly motivated person to fill a half time (50%) position as Director of Admission, Financial Aid and Marketing.  This is a key administrative staff position. The Grammar School Summer Program!
Save the dates June 29th - July 24th!
We are excited to announce that this summer we will offer another full month of summer camps for students ages 4 -12.   The Studio Arts program will have new offerings and new teachers as well as old favorites.   The Athletic Adventures program will include biking, soccer, skateboarding, and more.  The Nature Camp will include wilderness and survival skills.  For these camps, students may attend for two or four weeks.  Classes will be split ages 6-9 and ages 9-12.  Participants may focus in one area or create a mixed day that combines elements of all the programs.   Camps run from 9-3:30.   Classes will be taught by professional artists and educators.

We will also offer a Young Explorers camp for children ages 4 and 5.  Each week will have an exciting and different theme.

Look for camp updates and details to come in future Wednesday notices.  Brochures and Registration forms will be sent home in early April.

I had a chance to look at our statistics from last year and am excited to share the numbers with you.  We had 115 Campers last summer.  They came from 24 different towns and 6 states.  64 campers were from private schools (5 different private schools)   We gave financial aid to 25% of our campers.  15% received more than 50% tuition reduction.  and we gave full financial aid to 9% of our campers.

OKEMO REFUNDS AND ADJUSTMENTS -
When Okemo refunds us our credit for the 7th day, I will begin refunding money to families after making adjustments for alpine rentals still outstanding, PSD x-c rentals, chaperones fee changes etc. Refunds vary from 12.00 to 44.00 depending on rentals, parent chaperone credits and rentals still due. I hope to get these out to you
after winter break.

IMMUNIZATIONS AND HEALTH RECORDS - are not up to date for many or our students.  I will be sending out letters this week to those of you who, according to my records, need boosters or updates.  PLEASE, update my records or make an appointment over break to have these immunizations checked by your doctor.  Marcia

K-4TH GRADE- will be holding Open Classrooms every Thursday during the month of March from 9 am-12 noon for new families to explore TGS.  Please tell any friends or neighbors who might be interested in learning more about the Grammar  School to explore this opportunity.  We are trying a month long advertising campaign on NHPR and will talk about this on our website if you care to learn more.  Please let us know what you think.  Marcia

THINK SPRING (AUCTION)

While you're still rightfully enjoying skiing and all that winter has to
offer, the time has come to start planning this year's Spring Auction.

SAVE THE DATE! Friday, May 15th at Boggy Meadow Farm in Walpole, NH. This is the premier social event for the TGS adult community as well as an important fundraiser. Fine food, drink, aucton items and live music!  BroadBand has already committed to playing and they are sure to get everyone dancing (featuring TGS parent and French teacher Johanna Gardner and her husband Bahman Mahdavi. This highly energized band is sure to please.  Food catered by TGS's own Elizabethan Fare run by Elizabeth and David Warner. Auctioneering by the famed Ned Childs.

Mark Green and Kathleen Hathaway have agreed to co-chair this year's auction again and are looking for parents to volunteer for auction responsibilities. We also ask that all parents help contribute auction items large and small...details to follow...

We need folks to:  1: help coordinate and solicit live and silent auction items  2: work with teachers/students on class projects 3: help with decorations. Some folks have already stepped up and volunteered to coordinate these activities, but they will need help from the

AFTER SCHOOL SPANISH CLASS BEGINS MARCH 10TH! - Spanish language will be explored through songs, games, art projects, stories, and puppets in a six-week Spanish program for preschool and kindergarten students*.  

This class is being offered by Spanish teacher and Grammar School parent, Elissa McLean.  Elissa has twelve years of experience teaching Spanish to children, teenagers, and adults in a variety of settings. Classes will be held at TGS on Tuesdays from March 10th through April 14th from 3:10 to 4:30. The cost is $75. Call 387-2522 or email [email protected] to register.

�If there is interest in this class for older students, let Elissa know ASAP and we might be able to offer a simultaneous class for older children.

GREER COWAN RECEIVES HER CERTIFICATE OF SERVICE FOR THE VERMONT PAGE PROGRAM - Over the past six weeks, Greer Cowan served as a Legislative page in the Vermont State House.  Each year 30 young Vermonters are selected for this program.  Serving as a page offers a unique opportunity to observe the workings of the legislature and to witness first-hand the historic events in Montpelier.  Greer had an excellent experience being part of this program and recommends it to any interested members of next year's eighth grade class.

THE KINDERGARTEN AND THIRD GRADE CLASSES - are working to collect non-perishable food items and toiletries for Putney Family Services during the month of February.  Please feel welcome to bring donations to these classrooms.  Throughout this school year our contributions have been greatly needed and appreciated.  Thank you.

CONNECTICUT RIVER CHILDREN'S CHORUS DEBUT CONCERT- Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 6 pm in the Currier Center at The Putney School. This is a newly formed invitational chorus of singers from 5 area private schools: Trinity Christian School, Keene; St. Michael School, Brattleboro; St. Joseph Regional School, Keene; The Neighborhood Schoolhouse, Brattleboro; and The Grammar School, Putney. The concert is open to the public and Free of charge.

TGS singers in grades 5-8 are invited to participate.  Rehearsals will be during school time except for the final rehearsal and brown bag supper with everyone at 4:00 at TGS on the day of the concert.  Then we will proceed to The Putney School together for the concert.  Parent drivers and assistants are needed.  Please let Alli know If your child would like to participate and if you'd like to get involved.

RECORDER CLASSES resume on Tuesday, March 3rd for 3rd-6th graders.

Eight week open studio/art class for adults at Great River Arts in Bellows falls.   Beginning on Feb.4th, 7-9 on Wednesday nights.  Open to beginners and experienced artists.  We will experiment with painting and collage and have use of the print studio -  most materials supplied.  It is a small and supportive group of artists.  Facilitated by Julia Zanes.  Cost $150.  Call 869-3168 with questions or interest.

BMC Music School Now Registering Adults & Children - The snow is flying, it's cold outside: what a great time to learn a new instrument, or brush up on a long-abandoned one! The Brattleboro Music Center Music School provides many opportunities for students of all ages and abilities to play, sing, listen, learn and enjoy making music together. Programs include individual lessons, classes, ensembles and student orchestras.
 
Classes for youth include Annie Frelich's Movin' Intro Music and the new Little Strummers Ukelele Club, Music Makers for grades K-3, Solf�ge for Jr. High and High School students, and Music Adventure Program for children with disabilities.
