The Grammar School Celebrates Our Library's 49th Birthday! Thursday, February 5th
Each year we celebrate our wonderful library with a birthday party that includes exciting entertainment provided by various classes, opening gifts from students, and all delighting in delicious cupcakes. A week from today, on Thursday, February 5th, the Library will be celebrating its 49th birthday.
If you would like to send a gift to the birthday party, a library wish list was sent home via back pack express and can be seen on line at http://web.mac.com/tgs5364/Library/From_the_Library.html. Putney Books also has a copy of our list as well as most of the books on it. If you opt instead to give a book from your child's bookshelf, please check that the book is in mint condition and that we do not have a copy in the library. While all thoughtfully selected gifts are greatly appreciated, our growing library no longer has room for duplicate or worn copies of books.
Bakers...once again, if you would be willing to contribute a dozen cupcakes for the birthday party, please let me know. We estimate that we will need eleven dozen.
At TGS we are fortunate to have a library that receives support from so many. Parents generously volunteer in the library, encourage students to use the library regularly, read with their children during the March Reading Challenge, participate in the book fair, and contribute to the library through gifts and donations. As always, we are grateful for your support.
The library birthday party is an enjoyable event for everyone. If you would be willing to bake a dozen cupcakes or if you have any questions, please contact me at school, home (869-1467), or by email (pderby@tgs-putney.org).
Thank you, Ponnie
AFTER SCHOOL CLAY CLASS BEGINS JANUARY 28TH! Younger students, (kindergarteners through 3rd graders), can explore creative hand building techniques in clay. This class is being offered by art teacher and Grammar School parent, Collin Leech. Collin has over thirteen years of experience teaching art to children and adults in a variety of settings. She has taught for V.S.A, Great River Arts, Center for Creative Healing and is currently a teacher at The River Gallery School in Brattleboro. The Annual Fund Is.....

LET IT SNOW BOOKS!! Read any good books lately? Let us all know! Fill out a Snowflake Book Review Form, return it to Ponnie, and you will be entered in a raffle to win a $10.00 gift certificate from Putney Books. JANUARY COLLECTION FOR PUTNEY FAMILY SERVICES Rather
than one or two specific classes assuming the monthly responsibility
for collecting toiletries and non-perishable foods for Putney Family
Services' food shelf, we start 2009 with a school-wide effort.
Throughout January boxes are distributed in hallways for this month's
collection. Thank you.
VISIT THE TGS UNDERGROUND on the web for links to South Pacific, 7th grade homework, library and more. Just added - a video of Moses singing "I Believe I Can Fly" at the 2008 Graduation and a link to the new Musical Blog where you can find historical clips from past musicals.
LOOKING FOR NEW LUNCH OPTIONS FOR YOUR KIDS? Want to support a local business and get a great deal in the process? Mountain Pauls in Putney is offering a school lunch program, you can order from their school lunch menu the night before and it will be ready for you to pick up the next morning on your way to school. Each lunch includes a sandwich, piece of fruit, and a drink. (More options are available for additional charges.) Call 387-4446 for more information. You can see the menu on the bulletin board outside Tammys office.
NOTES FROM THE GREEN COMMITTEE - The Grammar School Composting Project. In 2006-07 The Grammar School spent $2718 to dispose of its waste in a four-yard dumpster that went directly to the landfill. In 2007-08, The Grammar School Composting Project began. We began using a four-yard compostable collector and a three-yard trash dumpster. The reduction in waste bound for the landfill, an accomplishment itself, saved the school about $600! The question for the 2008-09 academic year is how we can continue to both reduce our waste and save the school money. One idea is to include a scale to weigh trash during work jobs. Once we find out how much trash we produce in one week, we can then work together to see how low we can go.
THE LIBRARY NEEDS YOU! - Regardless of what your talents are, the library can use your help. If you can type, have decent handwriting, can sew, alphabetize, have good number recognition, are crafty, have basic office skills, or just love books and you are able to come to the library or are willing to do something at home; your help would be very welcome. Please call me at school 387-5364 x104 or at home 869-1467 or email me at pderby@tgs-putney.org. Monday and Wednesday-Friday I'm at school, but I'd be willing to come in on Tuesday morning before skiing if that's a good time for you.
Thank you for any help. The library is a wonderful place for the community, and it can be even better with your help. Ponnie
