Teaching the World to Swim
by Laura S. Jones The USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation supports the efforts of energetic and passionate Masters swimmers who want to make a difference. Masters coach Bill Meier is just such a person. It is impossible to talk with him for even five minutes without being inspired to emulate his efforts. "It was just one of the best things we ever did," Meier says of the week of free swim lessons for adults that his team offered to their community. Read more...

Five Simple Steps to Relieve Stress Right Now
by Katrina Radke Are you feeling stuck? Have you been stressed lately? We all deal with adversity at some point in our lives. The key is to know how to manage these moments and still feel good about ourselves. Step 1: Breathe and Get Present When we're stressed, we don't notice that our breathing becomes shallow. Pay attention to how you are breathing right now. Are you letting air get past your neck? This is the simplest step and yet we often neglect it. Take 10 slow deep breaths right now: Close your mouth, and breathe in fresh air into your nose, letting your belly rise. As you exhale, let your mouth open, jaw relax, and belly fall, releasing tension. Try this three times per day for the next week. Read more...

2012 USMS Speedo 3000/6000 Postal National Championships
Starting September 15, the Long Beach Grunion Swim Team is hosting the 2012 USMS Speedo 3000 and 6000 Postal National Championships. The objective is to swim 3000 yards or meters and/or 6000 yards or meters in any 25-yard or 25-meter pool you choose. Event results are sent in electronically or by mail so you can compare yourself to other swimmers doing the same event. Some people do these Postal events for competition, others do it for fitness; all who wish to participate are welcome. Good luck to all.

Try the Postals!
by Laura S. Jones Thinking of doing the 3000/6000 postal swims this year? They start September 15. If you're on the fence, maybe reading about last year's participants will inspire you to take the plunge. Dave Sebastian of Illinois Masters was the meet director for the 2011 3000 and 6000 postal swims, and he was in awe of both the selection process and the feats of the swimmers. 2011 was the first year these postals could be swum in either a 25-yard or a 25-meter pool, and there were a total of 536 entries. This was also the first postal championship his all-volunteer team, the Chicago Smelts, has run. Money raised from entry fees went to several local charities and to assist with costs associated with sending Illinois Masters relays to various meets. "I had no idea how much goes on behind the scenes in the bid process," Sebastian says. Read more...

Special Advertorial
by Larry D. Baskin, All American Swim Supply
Recently, in an online Masters swimming forum, the conversation spun to the topic of technical swimsuits. I read confusion in some of the posters' comments. "How do I pick just one suit among a multiplying array?" There were complaints from some men, especially those who recalled the days of full-body neck to ankle or waist to ankle suits. Guys are limited to "briefs, jammers, and shaving." By "tech suit" we're talking about suits made since 2009 and have been approved by the international governing body-FINA. What can a tech suit do for you? Read more...
