Super Low & Slow Stealth Swimming
As I pass a park near my home there is often a group of retirement community residents practicing T'ai Chi. Precise movements, full ranges of motion, impeccable balance-all demonstrated as though someone pushed the slow-mo button on the VCR. As a student of human motion, what strikes me is that such execution of complex actions requires mastery of posture, balance and precise motion as well as complete mindfulness and highly concentrated focus at all points throughout the activity. Since the participant does not move quickly from one position to the next, there is no opportunity to gloss past parts of the activity where balance and/or position are iffy. Read more... |

Opportunities for Certification
The USMS Coaches Committee and Club and Coach Services have developed new curricula for Level 1 and Level 2 USMS Masters Coach Certification. The new courses are taught in classroom settings throughout the country. Participants receive a "Certificate of Participation" once they finish the class. If participants wish to become certified, they must join ASCA and deliver to ASCA the completed tests from the coursework and the application for USMS/ASCA Masters Coach Certification. ASCA will grade the tests, process the applications and deliver the certificates. Coaches Handbook
We are pleased to introduce the new Coaches Handbook, now on our coaching resources page on the usms.org website. Some of the most important services that U.S. Masters Swimming provides to its members are the support, training, and education of its Masters swim coaches. This booklet is designed with the needs of all coaches in mind, to be used as a guide to becoming more knowledgeable in running a practice, club or program.

What Rule is THAT?!

Transferring of Clubs
The Coach Asks: Regarding national championship meets: 1. Can a swimmer transfer clubs up until the first day of competition? 2. Can a lone member of one club swim on a relay with 3 members of another club? 3. How are clubs determined to be regional or local clubs? Answers: 1. No, a swimmer cannot transfer clubs up until the first day of competition at nationals. A swimmer's affiliation as stated on the entry form shall apply throughout the meet. A swimmer can, however, declare unattached status up until the first event in which the swimmer competes at nationals. The swimmer cannot declare unattached status at nationals after competing in the first event. (104.5.4A[3]) Only the swimmer can declare unattached status; a coach cannot declare a swimmer unattached. 2. No, all swimmers on a relay must be members of the same USMS-registered club; otherwise, it is a disqualification (102.9.1). 3. For competition at national championship meets, a regional club is a USMS-registered club made up of swimmers who represent that club at nationals, but at competitions within their LMSC, they compete for entities or subgroups (such as workout groups/"teams") that are different from the club they compete for at nationals (104.5.6B). An example would be a statewide or LMSC-wide club whose members compete for their town's or local pool's workout group at meets in the LMSC during the regular season but compete for the statewide or LMSC-wide club at nationals. When swimmers compete for the same USMS-registered club at meets in their LMSC as well as at nationals, that club is a local club.
