Quick Tip for Different Skill Levels

Coach Stu Kahn, DAM
Too Many Different Abilities and Not Enough Lanes?
Stu KahnTry using timed sendoffs instead of intervals. Have the group all do 8 x (somethings) on 3:15. The fast swimmers can do 225s, the almost fast swimmers can do 175s and the soon-to-be fast swimmers can do 125s. Everybody else in between picks the ideal distance for them as well. Even within a single lane it's possible to have the swimmers go different lengths.

Prepare Your Swimmers
2012 Hour Swim This event runs from January 1 to January 31, 2012. The objective is to have your swimmers swim as far as possible in one hour in any pool you choose that is 25 yards or longer. Your event results are to be sent in electronically or by mail so you can compare your swimmers to other swimmers doing the same event. The recorded distance (total yards swum) that you submit determines the order of finish. If two or more swimmers report the same distance, a tie will be declared.

This is a USMS sanctioned event and all participants must be registered for 2012 with USMS (or the equivalent organization for non-U.S. swimmers). Foreign swimmers are not eligible for USMS records or All-American status. A copy of your current 2012 registration card must accompany your entry.

What Rule is THAT?!

Lap Counting in the 400 Short Course Meters Freestyle
Cathy Kasey

The Coach Asks: During a short course meters meet the meet director told us that we couldn't provide lap counters for swimmers in the 400 freestyle. I thought counters were allowed for the 400 free. What is the rule?

Answer: Counters are allowed for the 400 short course meter freestyle, because a swimmer may appoint a counter for events of 16 lengths or more except for the individual medley (USMS 102.10.6A). It is a violation of USMS rules to deny a swimmer a counter for events of 16 lengths or more except for the IM. As of 2011 USA Swimming no longer allows counters for the 400 short course meter freestyle (USA-S 102.6A), so that is now a difference between USMS and USA-S rules. That new difference could cause confusion for officials and meet directors who also work USA Swimming meets. FINA also does not provide counters for the 400 meter freestyle (FINA SW 2.6.3).

However, even though USMS allows counters for the 400 short course meter freestyle, note that there is no warning signal for the 400 short course meter freestyle, because a starter or designee shall sound a warning signal in events 500 yards or longer (USMS 103.8.7).

For any questions about rules contact Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair.
