What Rule is THAT?!

Times Counting for USMS Top 10
Cathy Kasey

The Coach Asks: A couple of my swimmers are going to a "recognized" meet. I want to make sure their times will count for USMS Top 10. Would rule 102.6 (event limit) be a relevant rule for recognition?

Answer: No. 102.6 is not one of the relevant rules that USMS-recognized meets must conform to (the complete list of relevant rules required for recognition are listed in 202.2.1E). All of the relevant rules for recognition are the stroke rules in 101, the rules for swimmers with a disability in 108, and rules that affect the quality of the times; swimwear (102.14.1), timing (103.12.3 and 103.13.1-.4 & .6), records and Top 10 (105.1, 105.2.1 & .2A, and 105.3.2, .7A & .8), and facility standards (107.2.1 & .3A, 107.3, 107.11.1 & .2, and 107.13).

For example, the swimwear rule was added to the list of relevant rules in the 2011 rulebook to prevent the use of illegal high-tech suits that might potentially be allowed at a recognized meet, thus giving swimmers an unfair advantage for faster times as compared to swimmers at USMS sanctioned meets. Allowing more events per day than USMS does, does not give an unfair advantage for better times in events. If anything, it should actually result in slower times as the swimmer competes in additional events at the end of the day.

For any questions about rules contact Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair.
