New Members? Reach Out to Them Right Away
Coach Services

Do you occasionally have someone sign up for your team without coming to the pool first? With more and more people finding us on the web at usms.org, especially places to swim, this can happen.

You can monitor this by making sure that when someone registers for USMS and signs up for your club, you get an email letting you know.

Just let your local registrar know that you would like to receive a notification email when a new member joins your club. All the registrar will need is a valid email address.

You can find your local registrar by clicking the blue "Local Programs" tab on usms.org, then selecting your LMSC, then selecting "LMSC Officers."

Once you have this in place, you will receive an email each time someone registers for your club. This is a great way to track your regular members during the renewal months and a way to make sure you send out the welcome wagon when a new member joins.

Bid to Host a 2013 Open Water Championship
Open waterThere is still time to get your bid in to host a 2013 Open Water Championship event. Fill out the appropriate bid form which can be found on the Open Water and Long Distance page at usms.org. Email it back by August 1, 2011. Attachments to the bid form, such as maps for OW swims, logos, and pertinent event details, are not required but will definitely be considered. A safety plan for the OW events is required to be submitted with the bid.

What Rule is THAT?!

Official Times from Splits
Cathy Kasey The Coach Asks: Can a swimmer get an official time for an initial butterfly split from an IM?

Answer: Yes, as long as it meets the timing requirement (two watches or two buttons or automatic timing for USMS Top 10; three watches or three buttons or automatic timing for national and world records). The USMS Rule Book lists that specific example in 103.13.2, "Official Time," on page 26, because swimmers have erroneously been denied official butterfly split times from the IM in the past. The first two lines of 103.13.2 ("an official time for an event or stroke can only be achieved in that event or stroke, or in an initial distance of such event or stroke"), might make one think that a split time for the fly portion of the IM might not be allowed as an official time so that example is listed. 101.6, "Individual Medley," on page 4, specifically names butterfly as "the first one-fourth" of the IM; therefore an official split time for the butterfly portion(s) of the IM can be achieved in the IM if the timing requirements noted above are met. This is the same scenario as getting an official backstroke split time for the relay leadoff of a medley relay, and no one questions that as an official split time. Similar to the IM, 101.7.2, "Medley Relay," on page 5, lists backstroke as the first one-fourth of the medley relay.
