Kalpana Nathan didn't think if herself as an athlete until she joined her local Masters team, at the suggestion of a colleague, who happened to be a coach and top tier Masters swimmer. Her coaches and teammates have made a huge difference in her life. She is probably a lot like someone on your team. Read her story here.

Automatic Submission of Splits
Cathy Kasey

The Coach Asks: Are splits, except for backstroke events, automatically submitted from nationals even without a split request?

Answer: Usually but not always. The meet program at each national championship meet publishes information about splits for that meet, so be sure to read the meet program when you arrive to find out if automatic submission of splits will be offered. In order to automatically report the splits from nationals for USMS Top 10 and Records, the following five criteria must be in place:

  1. The meet host must agree to offer automatic submission of splits.
  2. The officials must agree to watch all relays for second swimmers interfering with the touch pads by starting in the water or standing on the tops of the touch pads when starting from the edge of the pool.
  3. The technology must be available to search all the splits except those from individual backstroke events and disqualifications for national/world records and build a Top 10 report from the splits for submission to USMS. This technology is separate from that managing the meet.
  4. A written request for all splits for all swimmers for all events except for individual backstroke events must be submitted. Currently the Rules Chairman does this for each national meet that agrees to automatically submit splits. Backstrokers must still submit individual split requests except for the 200 medley relay.
  5. The head lane timer in each lane must verify that the name of the leadoff swimmer on the card is actually the first swimmer competing in the relay.

The option for automatic split submission is currently offered only at national championship meets.
