Coaching Silently
Some swim coaches are classified as "yellers" or "shouters" because they call out instructions to their swimmers while they are in the water. As a young swimmer, I had a yeller coach, and I never heard what she said. I could see an animated adult trying to shout instructions from her poolside location or, sometimes, running next to me with her mouth moving and face flushed. I knew sounds were coming out, and they seemed important, but I couldn't hear what they were. Read more

What Rule is THAT?!

Rule Changes from Convention
The Coach Asks: I heard that USMS was considering approving tech suits for short course yards pool competition. Did the swimwear rules for pool competition change?
Answer: No. The swimwear rules for pool competition did not change. However, the following major changes were made to USMS rules at the USMS convention in September: - Initial splits and relay leadoff splits can be recorded by a minimum timing level of two watches for USMS Top 10.
- Applications and supporting data for national records must be submitted to USMS within 90 days of the end of the season.
- When a moveable bulkhead is used, the length of the course must be confirmed prior to the start of the meet.
- An adjustable setting back plate may be used on a starting platform.
- Three new schedules of events have been selected for Nationals.
For any questions about rules contact Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair.

Renewal Notice!
Club registration for 2011 is underway. Many of our clubs, 194 so far, have already renewed for 2011. But we still have almost 500 clubs to go.
Members cannot join a club if it has not yet renewed its membership. Individual 2011 membership renewals begin on November 1st, so clubs need to act quickly.
By now your club representative should have received an emailed renewal notice. If your club has not received a notice, please contact your local registrar. You can find your registrar by searching on your LMSC.
