Strength Training for Competitive Masters Swimmers

Background On TRUE Strength Training
Craig KellerThe increased popularity of "lifting weights" (for whatever reason or application) has led to tremendous confusion as to how to train. While muscle magazines, and the body building subculture, have existed for years, it has not been until recent decades that "sport specific training" and "performance enhancement training" has become the effective art it is today.

In the modern era it is commonly accepted that resistance training and developing functional strength is essential for competing effectively in nearly all sports. Several sports have been completely transformed by strength training, including track and field, football and baseball. It's not a coincidence that the era of the common sub :10 second 100 meter dash, 325 pound lineman and 50 home run seasons have all been accomplished by the increasing sophistication of resistance and strength training methodologies. Coaching Starts with Education
ASCAThe first U.S. Masters Swimming/ASCA Certification Level I and II program was a collaboration between the U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee and Club Development and Coach Services Team. It took place at the ASCA World Clinic in Indianapolis on August 30-31.

Twenty-seven Coaches from 18 LMSCs, representing approximately 5000 USMS members, were in attendance. The coaches were diverse in experience ranging from coaches who were interested in starting a Masters swim program to those who have been coaching for over 20 years. Some coaches were affiliated with USA Swimming clubs, YMCAs, and triathlon clubs The 10-hour certification program provided information on coaching philosophy, basic business practices, special populations, risk management, open water, working with triathletes, writing workouts, dryland exercises and introduction to all four strokes.
