Greetings! For those of you who missed SwimFest '10, we have included a wrap-up video sure to pique your interest for next year.
And to underscore the importance of the athlete-coach relationship in Masters swimming, Joyce Deutsch with the St. Louis Area Masters writes
about the special bond she has with her coach and how much his
expertise and encouragement have helped her to become the swimmer she is
today.
Also in this issue, Kami Larripa with Davis Aquatic Masters contributes some strength training drills and an article co-written with her mother, Cathy Larripa.

Plyo for Power
Strength training, when planned thoughtfully and executed mindfully, can
not only improve your swimming, but may also reduce the likelihood of
developing over-use injuries, a condition experienced by most athletes
at one time or another. Many swimmers express concern that the
increased muscle mass resulting from strength training will slow them
down. Others fear wasting valuable time, and wonder if strength gains
will actually translate to improved swimming performance. [Read more]

My Slow Evolution in Masters Swimming
In September 2009, at age 58, I decided to get fit. I showed up at the
Saluki Masters Swim Club on the campus where I work wearing a JC
Penney's drag producing suit and twenty extra pounds of cellulite. Even
so, Coach Clay Kolar was welcoming. He asked a few questions about my
swimming experience, which was limited, and explained interval training.
He paired me with another woman. "This is Lucy," he said, "she's here
because she wants to get in shape. You'll be good training partners." [Read more]

FINA/USMS Rule Differences for Swimmers Headed to Worlds
The Coach Asks:
What are the differences between USMS rules and FINA rules
that our swimmers might face at the World Championships in Goteborg, Sweden
this summer?
The Answer:- FINA officials lap count for swimmers and show
the remaining number of lengths to be completed (descending order rather than
ascending order)
- Swimmers could be required to swim two-to-a-lane
in freestyle events 400 meters and longer
- Any swim that does not meet the qualifying
standard will receive "NT" in the results with no official time or place
-
FINA requires notification of disqualifications
via posted code in the meet results
- Unattached swimmers are not allowed
- Filing a protest costs money (100 Swiss francs
or its equivalent, which is refunded if the protest is upheld)
- Open water swimmers must follow the FINA open
water swimwear rules (e.g., all textile suits that shall not cover the neck,
extend past the shoulders or extend past the ankles)
