Greetings!
In our technique feature for this issue of STREAMLINES for Coaches, Susan Ingraham helps us teach our swimmers how to press, not pull the water for maximum propulsion.
If you are fielding a team for Atlanta, remind your swimmers that the deadline for registration is tomorrow. Also, upcoming open water and long distance championship events are linked below.
Kathy Casey helps to clarify more rules for us, and the New England Masters Short Course Championships sets a new record, check out the video on our new YouTube channel.

 | Give Your Swimmers A Feel for the Water

|
by Susan Ingraham

Reinforcing
the Press, Not a Pull
Do you find yourself constantly trying to get your athletes to
understand that they can be stronger underwater? Many swimmers don't
understand to press their hands against the water rather than pulling
the hands through the water. This set and special notes will help
reinforce the concept of pressing, not pulling. There are two objectives
of this workout:
1. To gain a stronger hold underneath the water
2. To develop a feel for the power that can be generated throughout the pull phase in Freestyle. [Read more]

Splits, Counters and Choice Events
Butterfly Split from IM: The Coach Asks: Can a swimmer get an official butterfly
split time from an IM and have it count for records and top 10?
Answer:Yes, if the split time is recorded by fully
automatic timing, the swimmer completes the race without being disqualified,
and the swimmer requests the split in writing before the conclusion of the
meet. Article 103.13.2
specifically lists the fly leg of the IM as an example of a split (also see
103.13.1 and 105.2.2). For
example, the swimmer could get an official 50 fly split time and an official
100 fly split time from the 400 IM, and both split times could count as
official times for USMS records and Top 10.
Warning Signal: The Coach Asks: Why isn't there a warning signal for
events 400 yards and longer as indicated by 102.10.6?
Answer:Article 102.10.6A says a swimmer may have a
counter for events of 16 lengths or more instead of 400 yards or more. The only individual event in yards with
16 lengths is the 400 IM and it is specifically excluded from this "counter"
rule. The next event in yards with
more than 16 lengths is the 500 free. Article 103.8.7 states that a starter will provide a warning signal in
events 500 yards or longer.
Events Labeled "Choice" or "Open"
(Illegal): The Coach Asks: Can a meet entry limit each swimmer to one
200 event by offering an event called "200 Open" or "200 Choice" and let the
swimmers each choose the stroke to swim?
Answer: You can limit each swimmer to one 200 event, but
you cannot call the event "200 Open" or "200 Choice." Only recognized distances and strokes as listed in
article 102.5 are considered for USMS Top 10 and records; in this case, 200
free, back, breast, fly, or IM, not "open" or "choice." An official time can only be achieved
in that event or stroke entered, and freestyle events only count for freestyle
regardless of which stroke is used (103.13.2), so don't call it "200 free"
either. 102.10.1B allows combining events of the same distance 200 yards or
longer. In your meet information,
consecutively list the events to be combined and on the entry form (sample
below), instruct each swimmer to enter only one of those events, and have
enough officials to cover the different events that might be combined in a
heat. In the meet information
state how you will seed the stroke choices, so it's easier for officials to
judge. A sample for an entry form
follows:
Event #4-8 200 meters (choose only one) free, back, breast, fly, IM. For any questions about rules contact Kathy Casey, USMS
Rules Chair.
