Greetings!
Happy 2011! There seemed to be a collective sigh of relief as 2010 came to an end. And here we are - off into 2011. Has it been a fast start for you? Full of good intentions and resolve, good energy and taking on new challenges? Or has it been a slow start, waiting for a swift kick in the pants? If it's been a slow start, NOW is the time to create your momentum. If 2011 is to be a different, better year, then the decision to make that happen must come from within. All of the nay-sayers and researchers who prove statistically that resolutions don't work put many into a position of not setting ANY goals. And by discounting goals and the belief of achieving them, it's like Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can, or think you can't--you're right." Write your goals down, keep them in front of you and re-visit them. And if others see them, all the better as you'll have some accountability. The worst thing that can happen is that you moved from the place you are now in the direction of your target. And if we're not growing, we are dying. Keep moving! You can do it.

Are you Going for "Fit" or "Healthy" in 2011?
As we start off the new year and many are looking at starting a program to "get in shape," it's important to know the difference between 'fit' and 'healthy.' They are not the same.
 | Working out should ENERGIZE you!
| A healthy person can be fit, but a fit person isn't always healthy. Too many times, I see people in the gyms or playing sports where they are hobbled by injury and/or using pain meds to play through the pain. And the difference here is knowing the difference between "work" and "pain."
Pain is the high priority signal that your body uses to tell your brain to STOP the activity. Work is when you feel muscles burning from fatigue or stress in a good way. Knowing the difference can make all the difference in the longevity of your ability to work out, not to mention your joints, ligaments, cartilage and tendons.
If you're using pain meds to get through your workout or taking anti-inflammatory pills afterward, it's a good idea to take a step back and re-evaluate a few things. 1. Is this workout appropriate for me right now? 2. What is causing the pain or swelling? 3. Do I feel energized and charged after the workout, or beaten down and tired?
By answering the simple questions, you'll get an idea of whether you'll be side-tracked early in your efforts to get fit. And if you make sure that you have a solid foundation of 'healthy' going into your workouts, then you will get to 'fit' much more easily and efficiently.
Quickly addressing some of the questions... 1. You'll know if the workout is appropriate because you will be able to function and perform the workout again. While you may feel some muscle soreness, you should not feel hampered or unable to move. You may need to find stepping stones to get to the appropriate workout level for you. 2. If you're getting pain and/or swelling during or after your workouts, then it's time to take a step back and look at what you're taking into the workout. Most likely, there are structural misalignments that need to be resolved or we need to address #1. 3. The best workouts are those that help you increase your energy through your day. You should feel charged up, not beaten down. Of course, making sure you're getting enough sleep, hydration and proper nutrition are key factors as well. A functional body going into a workout will also ensure that you are not "fighting" yourself in the form of musculoskeletal dysfunction (causing excessive wear-and-tear and fatigue).
