Egoscue Santa Monica - News & Updates
April 2010
Greetings!
Pete Egoscue's new book is finally here! Let's Lighten Up - Replenish What Makes Us Strong; Enjoy the Very Best of Health; Always Catch the Rain is an insightful encore to Pain Free and a must read for those looking for a stronger tie-in to posture and personality. Going beyond the "knee-bone-connected-to-the-shin-bone" comes the "trunk-rotation-connected-to-the-skepticism".
Call the clinic to order your signed copy today as books are not available in bookstores until later this year.

Tips for Training Your Avatar
Can you remember a time when it was FUN to feel your body free? Whether you were running, skipping, climbing, playing sports or just goofing off, there's nothing like the stimulation of muscles, pumping of blood, firing of millions of nerves and rush of adrenaline.

In the movie Avatar (and I can't believe it's coming out on DVD already!), the main character's "mind" is put into a body of a 9-foot alien with which he must learn how to balance standing, running, jumping, climbing, etc. The moment his mind melds with the avatar body, he gets his legs underneath him, heads outside and starts running. It's not that remarkable except for the fact that the main character's real legs are paralyzed and he hasn't been able to run for many years. So given the opportunity, he seized it and ran at top speed as far as he could go.
Fun walkers
Tip #1: Embrace your avatar under your nose. Find a park, beach, playground or trail to enjoy being in your body. Try skipping, hopping, jumping, running, climbing, etc. to get a feel for all the physical abilities of your avatar.

Do you still enjoy physical play?
I put a quote from Pete Egoscue on the bottom of my emails as a reminder, "We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing." As we've become so used to structured, scientifically-proven techniques and strategies, we sometimes forget that playing IS working out. Playing freeze tag, capture the flag, kick the can, hula hooping, skipping rope... all fun ways to enjoy a day and have some fun. I know too many people nowadays that don't have enough energy to have fun, but muster up the energy to hit the gym early in the morning for a grinding spin class. I'm not trying to knock the gym or taking classes, but vary it up and check the "fun-meter" while your doing it. Are you exercising for your heart & lungs, or for your mental health? It can be all of the above.

Tip #2: Your avatar has many physical hula hoopingfunctions. You will wear out parts by repeating the same limited patterns constantly. However, you will replenish your avatar's health and vitality through varied motion and playful activities. Remember, your mind is now connected to your avatar's physiology, so make sure your avatar is having fun!

Are you paying attention or blocking out feedback?
Your body has a way of telling you it's time to stop. It's called fatigue. Muscles deplete their glycogen stores or can't convert fat over to glucose fast enough, and the muscles tell you "no more." This idea of fatigue, however, seems somewhat old-fashioned these days as the stop signal for most is pain. And whether joint pain or muscle strain, many are not reaching the point of normal physiological function but instead reaching biomechanical thresholds. It's like doing a stress-test for ligamentous and tendinous strength instead of using the muscles and joints according to their proper function. And, unfortunately, if the muscles and ligaments pass the stress-test with musculoskeletal dysfunction, the joints will feel the effects down the road (hence arthritis, degenerative joint disease and the like).

Tip #3: Prevent overuse injuries and system breakdowns by preparing your avatar's body for proper movement. Do this by getting in balance and by engaging in a variety of activities so that they are fun (vs. monotonous & repetitive), invigorating (vs. tiring, wearing), and give a sense of connected presence (vs. get me out of this body). HINT: If you look down and see your avatar's feet pointing outward or catch a glimpse of the side-view with the head forward, these are signs that he/she is experiencing dysfunction and needs more variety of activity.

Having fun yet?
Here's where it gets a little dicey. Some people have lost the connection of fun and physical. Even worse, some never had it. To some, these words are mutually exclusive and should not be mentioned in the same sentence. But yes, once upon a time, before 300-plus channels on TV, before 24-7 interaction on cell phones and Twitter accounts, and before digitally created physical activity on the Wii -- there was physical play that equaled fun. It was fun to walk home from school and make up games along the way. It was fun to cut across the school yard and climb or slide under the fences. It was fun to have "free" days where there was no structure and we had to come up with games at the park.

Tip #4: Locate other avatars. Identify those interested Fun gamesin having fun while physically active. Enjoy logging hours of training by playing and enjoying games. Remember, this is all a simulation, make the most of it and take good care of your avatar body by treating it with a variety of movements, exercises and physical endeavors. And by all means, have fun!
