The Egoscue Method
Egoscue Santa Monica - News & Updates
June 2009
Greetings!
With summer upon us, it's time to get out and enjoy the beautiful Southern California scenery. Surfing, golfing, biking, hiking, gardening, and all of the other activities you've learned to love outdoors should be available to you. Don't let pain force you to spend your days limiting your activities.
Keep up with your E-cise menu or let us help get you on track and back in action.
Chasing Low Back Pain
The statistics say that 85% of people will go through some type of back pain in their lifetime. There can be many reasons behind painful symptoms occurring, from accidents or injuries to lifestyle and habits. Many cases can be avoided or quickly remedied if addressed in the proper way. Rest and medication may help with temporary relief, but if the cause of the problem is not addressed and corrected, the pain will most likely return and thus be considered "chronic."

Low back pain can go from a twinge to debilitating fairly quickly, which leads many to take drastic measures to remedy the symptoms. When pain is over-riding the senses, meds become a more acceptable solution and surgery doesn't seem such a far-fetched option. The critical point that is missed many times when these options are taken is the message the body is trying to convey. Pain is a signal, telling the brain something is not working correctly. Simply covering this signal with pain killers or injections may feel better in the short-term, but the body's signal may become stronger telling you "FIX ME!"

As Pete Egoscue says, "Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional." We may all experience pain at some time or another, but by suppressing it without investigating the reason behind it will lead to recurring problems. If, for example, low back pain is coming from a dysfunctional hip, the back pain may go away only to show up in one knee or the other. The dysfunctional area (the hip) goes unnoticed and without remedy. (In the photo below, low back pain symptoms are related to the tight hips, rounded shoulders and hip elevation -- correctable through targeted exercises).
LowBackPain
At the Egoscue Method, we look at the whole body and whether it is working together as it should. We investigate the origin of pain symptoms and restore proper function to the body as a unit. In this way, the Egoscue program is less about "pain management" and more about curing the source of the problem. The best part, however, is that you'll discover how to listen to your body and be in the driver's seat of your own health. Take charge today! We can help.

You can get started by reading one of Pete Egoscue's books. I recommend "Pain Free" if you have symptoms. You can also get started with the exercises on Egoscue.com or, better yet, call to set up your free consultation and find out what the best path is for your personal condition at 310-450-2549.
