Farmers Give Back to Grand Lake Community
Since 1988, Covenant House California has opened its doors to homeless youth, offering immediate assistance in the form of shelter and food as well as long term support through education and training programs. This year, Covenant House is also putting some local food on the table thanks to a partnership with the Grand Lake Farmers Market and its farmers. At the end of each market, Nicholas Darquea, a Covenant House staff member, leads a group of youth up and down the rows, collecting donated fruits and vegetables from farmers.
Jill Machado of Chinchiolo Farms (pictured above) keeps a box of apples set aside every week for the Covenant crew. Each week, as the pickers at her farm in Ripon start to take away the apples deemed just below market quality, she boxes them up, knowing that the youth at Covenant would be happy to have them.
When asked how the weekly trip of lugging boxes of fruits and vegetables works out for Covenant House, Nicholas enthusiastically responds - "totally worth it."
MAI is proud to partner with a handful of non-profits in each of our market communities, including Meals of Marin, Chabad of the East Bay, Novato Youth Center, Novato Human Needs Center, and the New Bridge Foundation. | |
