Crunch Time

One in three kids is obese, and by 2020 half our country is estimated to be grossly overweight.

Parents have taught their children about financial wellness and the need for a good education, but have failed miserably in health and wellness education.  Let's get to the youth of America while we still have a chance to head off the epidemic of type two diabetes that will not only hinder our bodies, but will put a strain on our personal and national debt.

Good health education starts at home with parents encouraging, teaching, and modeling proper nutrition and exercise.  Yes, schools provide some exercise, but physical education and the arts are usually among the first cuts to the K-2 curriculum.

So now, parents, its crunch time in more ways than one.  What can you as do to educate your children about physical wellness?
Start your child in various physical activities at a young age.  Respect that kids don't like the same things as other kids or even you, the parent. Make sure you expose them to a variety of team and individual activities so they can discover what they like.  Do all kids have to play organized sports?  No, the world of dance offers classes from ballet to hip-hop to ballroom.

Spotlight on Clients

Congratulations to FP client, Dr. Nancy Cole, who has taken on the challenge of learning and using new technology to lose 15 pounds over the last 3 months and completely changed her approach to her diet. Nancy allowed me to introduce to the "app" called "My Fitness Pal". This phone app allows you to set a goal weight and then track calories and activity to help you reach that goal. Nancy embraced the technology and made a strong commitment to using it to help her become more aware of the balance of calories in/calories out. Not only has she lost 15lbs, but she has changed her eating habits in a way that she can keep up the rest of her life. Way to go Nancy.

Greetings!

A great big THANK YOU to all trainers and clients who have been so supportive during the building of and moving to our new studio, located at 831 National Ave. I look forward to that being the main Fitness Plus home for years to come. We are happy to join other small, locally owned businesses that put their faith in Lexington's past and future by choosing to reuse old buildings in an existing footprint, rather than take up existing green space to build a new building.

I am very proud to offer this new space to both trainers and clients. Thank you again and enjoy your new shiny digs.

For everyday health tips, don't forget to check out Fitness Plus on Twitter and Facebook, as well as the Fitness Plus blog.

Have a great month,

Sheila
What's Happening at Fitness Plus

Obviously, the move. We are in and open for business at 831 National. Joining us at our new facility is long time Lexington trainer, Kelly Cecil and his clients. Kelly has been one of the leading trainers in the Lexington area for many years. Kelly and I started the Kentucky Association of Wellness Professionals in 2011 and decided to join forces in our personal training businesses so we could work more closely together on this new venture.

The association, KAWP, is designed to help both the consumer and the wellness professional. For the consumer, KAWP "vets" all prospective members and only accepts members that have met our high standards for their profession. Professionals that can and are currently members of KAWP include personal trainers, physical therapists, doctors, massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists and wellness coaches. These professionals can communicate with each other, refer, promote, etc., via our website.

For the consumer, KAWP is the best way for you to find a qualified wellness professional in your area, via our "professional search" tool on our website. Doctors, in particular, are excited about KAWP because it allows them to refer their patients to one place to meet their wellness needs, without worrying about the qualifications of the person they are referring their patient to. KAWP will also offer community wellness fairs, services, information, clinics, etc. to the public.

Blue Lotus Acupuncture is also up and running in our new space and physical therapy will be coming soon.

What if you could lose all the weight you wanted to, without shelling out for high-priced "health" foods, and without even breaking a sweat? Sound impossible? Well, it's not. In fact, you can eat what you want, when you want, if you know how to make some simple, smart swaps. And here's another secret you need to know: Many high-priced health foods are more likely to add fat to your body than to strip it away. And that's why Eat This, Not That! has been on a crusade against health-food ripoffs. Click on to find some of the worst offenders in the supermarket, some tricksters lurking on restaurant menus, and some simple swaps that will help you strip away pounds, fast.

"Meatless Lentil-Mushroom Burgers"

From Womens Health Magazine

I recently finished reading Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness, a memoir by vegan ultrarunner Scott Jurek. The book is sprinkled with practical running advice and yummy-sounding meat-free recipes that I've been eager to try, such as the lentil-mushroom burgers; they caught my eye as a potential alternative to hamburgers or grilled steak for Father's Day dinner.

"What will impress you is how tender, juicy, and 'meaty' they taste," writes Jurek. "I grew up grilling over campfires, and I know burgers. These are as delicious as they come."
