Shadowbox the Stress Away
(and maybe some extra pounds)

Boxing, also called pugilism, is a combat sport where people engage in a contest using just their fists. Boxing has been around as a form of competition since the ancient Greeks. The word "boxing" came to be used in England in the 17th century.

Since most people aren't in too much of a hurry to jump in a ring and slug it out with someone, I'd suggest trying out shadowboxing. This practice technique does not require a partner (or even any equipment for that matter).

Shadowboxing is a great workout, plus it is a great way to relieve some stress (maybe picture something that is troubling you while punching).

If you feel like switching up your cardio routine a bit, try doing some rounds of shadowboxing. A round in boxing is 3 minutes. Try doing five, three-minute rounds with a minute break in between rounds (you can burn between 100-200 calories in that time). All you need is a little space and a timer or stopwatch.

Spotlight on Clients

Congratulations to Mary Hartley (Chris Williams client) for winning the Fitness Plus NCAA pool. Mary trounced the competition, beating second place finisher, Brad Pitcock by 20 points. When asked how she did it, Mary replied, "I have no idea" ....... proving once again that too much basketball knowledge can be a curse when it comes to the NCAA tournament (we won't say where Tom Leach finished; let's just say he has way too much knowledge).

Greetings!

Spring has sprung! Time for shorts, short sleeves, dressed and skirts. Time for golf, tennis, gardening and swimming. Time for salads, fruit, farmers market veggies and patio dining. Enjoy this glorious, but short season of "window open weather" and the beauty of a Kentucky spring. We love that you are so dedicated to coming to the gym to get your workouts in, but don't forget to get outside and enjoy the beauty of where you live.

What's Happening at Fitness Plus

First, the BIG news: The Fitness Plus on N. Ashland Ave., in Lexington, is moving! Don't worry, it's not far; just around the corner to National Ave.

Why move? In short, to better serve our clients. Our new space will offer more and easier parking; more wellness services, including "in house" physical therapy and regular "on site" testing of key health markers, such as cholesterol and blood glucose levels; an additional bathroom; a bigger gym area; new functional training equipment, but the same great one on one service. We are excited about this move, which should happen sometime in May. Keep up with progress/pictures on our Facebook page and Twitter. Also, watch for info regarding our official grand opening and open house.

More news: Our Versailles location is growing in services and trainers. FP trainer, Jackie Hanson is now offering "Body Recall" classes in addition to her yoga classes in Versailles. Body Recall is a great program, especially for seniors, that was created by a woman from Berea, KY. It is a nationally recognized program that improves strength, balance and stamina. Versailles has also added a new trainer, Amy Ball, to its staff. Amy is a 20 year veteran of the fitness business and is a recent graduate from the Lexington Healing Arts Academy's Personal Fitness Training program. We are excited to have Amy as part of the Fitness Plus team in both Versailles and Lexington locations.

Josh is moving along on Harrodsburg Road. His new Fitness Plus facility has been met with open arms by the residents in the area; they are thrilled to finally have high quality personal training in their area. Congrats to Josh! Keep it up.

Don't be fooled; separate nutrition fact from fiction:

From Eat This Not That

Whether or not added sugar is bad for you has never been in dispute. The less sugar you eat, the better. But whether HFCS is worse than plain ol' table sugar has long been a contentious issue. Here's what you need to know: Both HFCS and table sugar, or sucrose, are built with roughly a 50-50 blend of two sugars, fructose, and glucose. That means in all likelihood that your body can't tell one from the other-they're both just sugar. HFCS's real sin is that it's supercheap, and as a result, it's added to everything from cereal to ketchup to salad dressing

It has more protein and less sugar than yogurt, but with the same creamy texture, tangy taste, and probiotics. These healthy bacteria are a known immune enhancer, and may protect against colon cancer, says Tamara Freuman, R.D.

Try it: Instead of yogurt in salad dressings or smoothies. Plain kefir is in the dairy aisle, but Lifeway also makes a dessert-ready frozen variety
