Trainer Tip:

Outsmarting the Diet and Exercise Myths

By: Nikki Ditsch

As a fitness professional I have heard many theories on diet and exercise over the years.  Some ideas out there are pretty ridiculous, but there are some myths out there that seem like they might have some merit.  This article will hopefully help you to see the truth about some of the most common diet and exercise claims that I frequently hear, and will help you make some healthy decisions in the future.

Myth #1:  Doing abdominal work or crunches will get rid of belly fat.
Truth: Abdominal work is important, and it is good to strengthen your core as it is the foundation of your body.  In regards to weight loss in a particular area, such as your abdomen, there is no such thing as spot reduction.  Spot reduction refers to the idea that repetitive exercise for a specific area, or group of muscles will reduce fat in that one area.  Weight loss is simply not that specific.  As your caloric expenditure exceeds your intake, whether by diet, exercise or both, you will begin to lose fat.  No matter how you work out, you will lose fat from head to toe.   So go ahead and do your crunches, planks, and ab exercises.  I am an advocate for a strong core!  However, if you are in the process of weight loss expect it to come off of your arms, legs, neck, midsection all the same.

Myth #2:  Working out turns fat into muscle.

Spotlight on Clients

I would like to send "Kudo's" to all of our adolescent clients. We have seen a growing number of clients 12-18 years of age. Of course, it is their parents that make their training possible, and I commend them for giving their children a gift that can benefit them for the rest of their life. These kids work hard and are learning how to take care of their bodies and their health, which will serve them well in years to come.

Greetings!

I am so proud of our clients. Winter is the toughest time to stay motivated about working out. Besides the holiday season, the gray days and lack of daylight make it tough to get excited about working out. But, despite this, our clients have had record setting attendance. I'm proud of the effort you are showing to keep your regular training appointments, despite the gray, dark and cold. This WILL pay dividends in the spring, when you can finally see your body.

I have always preached it is the consistency of exercise that is the most important component to your program; not the intensity or the type of exercise you do. Congratulations to you and thank you for your continued trust you have in Fitness Plus to help you stay healthy and fit.

What's Happening at Fitness Plus

Fitness Plus trainer Laura Coombs and owner Sheila Kalas were featured on KET's One to One program with host Bill Goodman. It aired first on Jan 29th, but can be seen anytime online. The program focused on discussing the issues of exercise, obesity, nutrition as well as the profession of personal training. We were honored to be asked by Bill to participate in his program and to be seen as a reliable source for information and education in our community.

Congratulations to trainer Nikki Ditsch, who received her "white coat" in the UK Physician's Assistant Program ceremony last month. Nikki has worked hard over the last 2 years to reach this point; she will now start the residency part of her program. Way to go Nikki.

New toys have arrived at the gym; make sure your trainer introduces you to them. We want to continually challenge you, our clients, in ways that will not only improve your muscular strength and overall fitness, but improve your balance, coordination and posture. The new Bosu platforms and "steel bells" will challenge you in new ways. Have fun!

How many calories do you burn?:

From Jillian Michaels

Your BMR is the number of calories your body burns in a day when operating at absolute minimum capacity. Basically, imagine sitting on the couch all day. (Is this a little too easy for you to imagine? Don't worry - we'll fix that!) Your BMR, then, is the number of calories your body burns just to maintain your heartbeat, digestion, respiration, tissue repair and other organ functions.

"10 Ways to Eat Healthily at the Steak House"

From Eat This Not That

Few meals satisfy like a good steak. And few things will ruin a good steak quicker than choosing the wrong cut or dousing your slab in a heavy-handed sauce. That's why it's best to take your steaks simply grilled when eating out, and to choose a lean cut, like sirloin. Unfortunately, the restaurant namesake isn't the only potential pitfall at the steak house.
