Trainer Tip:

What are your goals
for 2012?

By: Laura Combs

Many of us use the New Year to re-charge our focus on self-improvement of some kind.   The 5 steps below can help you stick to your resolutions and keep you motivated long enough to make a real change this year.   I'm a fan of lists, so get your pen and paper out and let's make a plan!

Preparation before Action. Gather your tools!  Many people dive into a goal dreaming about the end result and don't take time to plan.   List 10 things you'll need for success with your goal.  If you want to lose 20 pounds this year, your list might include a good pair of walking shoes, a pedometer, a water bottle, a subscription to a fitness magazine, a personal trainer, an exercise DVD, a food journal, an exercise buddy, a specific time of day and weekly schedule for exercise, and a commitment to eating more veggies.   This step can also be used to consider your potential barriers to success and remove them!  Make time to remove excuses.  See your doctor if you have aches or pains that prevent you from exercising.   Get a new cookbook and learn how to make vegetables delicious.   Make new friends who are active if your current mode of social networking involves sitting, eating, or drinking.  If you have kids at home, choose exercises that are family friendly like walking, dancing, going to the playground, or playing ball.

Spotlight on Clients

Congratulations to Holly Wiedemann, owner of AU Associates, on her latest completed project in Covington, KY. The completion of the Thomas Edison School Apartments project, is another in a long list of adaptive reuse and urban renewal projects that Holly has done in the region. Her work provides housing for elderly and needy people, while preserving and enhancing some of the wonderful architecture that our region has to offer.

Greetings!

Welcome to 2012; a new year, with new hopes and opportunities for you. As you begin this year, whether you make formal resolutions or not, I encourage you to make a basic assessment of where you are today, in regards to your overall health, and identify a couple of areas where you think you can improve. Typically, thoughts go to weight loss, but there is so much more. Read the article below on brain function and health. This research showing how regular exercise can help slow the mental decline that comes with aging is interesting and can help motivate you to put some more time in on the treadmill or in the gym in general.

Whatever your goals are in 2012, I hope you some time and thought into them, as proper planning is what leads to success. Trainer, Laura Coombs trainer tip is all about developing the proper plan for success. If you are interested in succeeding in 2012, give it a read.

What's Happening at Fitness Plus

Fitness Plus was excited and honored to be asked to participate in the KET television program, hosted by Bill Goodman, called "One to One". Bill asked Sheila Kalas and Laura Coombs to come on his show to discuss facts and tips related to health, obesity and fitness. We are proud that our community recognizes Fitness Plus and it's trainers as a reliable source of fitness education and information. This program will air several times, the first being on Sunday, January 29th at 1:00 p.m. The link to all the air times is on KET.

Fitness Plus is working with the personal training school, The Lexington Healing Arts Academy, allowing their students to do a part of their internship at our Ashland facility. As a part of their educational training, they are required to do several sessions of "hands on" training. Since these are uncertified students, these sessions will be offered for free. The students will be supervised, at all times, by a fully certified, experienced trainer. The school is currently looking for volunteers that want to take advantage of these free training sessions. If you know anybody who is interested in signing up, please contact the school directly.

Mental Decline Can Start at 45, Study Finds:

From SPARKPEOPLE.COM

Sorry, Boomers, but a new study suggests that memory, reasoning and comprehension can start to slip as early as age 45.

This finding runs counter to conventional wisdom that mental decline doesn't begin before 60, the researchers added. "Cognitive function in normal, healthy adults begins to decline earlier than previously thought," said study author Archana Singh-Manoux.
