Yoga and Flexibility

By: Amy Naber

When some people think of yoga, they imagine having to stretch like a gymnast. That makes them worry that they're too old, unfit, or "tight" to do yoga. The truth is you're never too old to improve flexibility.

The series of yoga poses called asanas work by safely stretching your muscles. This releases the lactic acid that builds up with muscle use and causes stiffness, tension, pain, and fatigue. In addition, yoga increases the range of motion in joints. It may also increase lubrication in the joints. The outcome is a sense of ease and fluidity throughout your body.

Yoga stretches not only stretch your muscles but all of the soft tissues of your body. That includes ligaments, tendons, and the fascia sheath that surrounds your muscles. And no matter your level of yoga, you most likely will see benefits in a very short period of time. In one study, participants had up to 35% improvement in flexibility after only eight weeks of yoga. The greatest gains were in shoulder and trunk flexibility.

Greetings!

Under the topic of "trying new things", I have just returned from a trip to Hawaii, visiting family (lucky me) and saw a new trend in exercise/working out that may find its way to Kentucky. "Paddle surfing", as it's known, is a fast growing trend in water based activity. Instead of traditional surfing where you need both a wave and a high level of skill to "ride" the wave back to shore.

With paddle surfing you only need a board, water and a paddle. This means all lakes and rivers are potential sites for paddle surfing. The level of skill needed for this activity is much lower than surfing and can be mastered by most in a few attempts. The workout benefit of paddle surfing can be very high, depending on the effort of your paddling. Just standing on the board will challenge the stability muscles in your core and the actual paddling motion works the upper body, your entire core and your lower body too. I even say a "board yoga" class being offered; boards were anchored in chest deep water and yoga was performed on the board! No that's a challenge for your core stability. Keep your eyes open for this trend making its way to KY or go online and find your own board and be one of the first people to do this in our area.

Drinking Water During Exercise:

From SPARKPEOPLE.COM

 The Well-Watered Exerciser
Except for oxygen, there's nothing your body needs more than an adequate supply of water. And the more you exercise, the more important it is to drink the right amount of water before, during, and after your workouts. Dehydration can make it hard to get the most out of your workout, and in extreme situations, can even be dangerous to your health. However, drinking too much water at the wrong time can also hinder performance..

"9 Ways to Burn Fat"

From Everydayhealth.Com

Everyone's metabolism naturally slows down with age. At 40, you could be burning 100 to 300 fewer calories a day than you did at 30, says Pamela M. Peeke, M.D., author of Body for Life for Women and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. That can translate into a 10-25-pound weight gain in a year. But you can counteract that slowdown and boost your body's fat-burning capabilities by making just a few tweaks to your daily routine. The following strategies will help you bust out of a weight-loss plateau and burn even more fat.
