Knee pain or hip weakness? By Laura Coombs
Knee pain has affected 19% of us in the past 30 days and is the second most prevalent type of joint pain (preceded only by back pain), according to the CDC.
Knee pain can be especially frustrating, especially when we don't understand how we got it or if it keeps coming back! It is sometimes caused by a single incident or injury, but more often it is caused by prolonged abnormal posture or repetitive motion.
Many times, knee pain is a result of UNDERUSING the neighboring joint, the hip!
Consider the anatomy of the knee. It is a simple hinge joint braced only with tendons and ligaments. Comparatively, the hip joint is both powerful and mobile, with many layers of muscle crossing it from a variety angles. In many of us the hip is deactivated and neglected, and the knee is forced to take on the roles of changing direction, generating power , and decelerating...all of which are jobs better suited for the hip.
Here are some exercises to activate your hip muscles and strengthen them:

Greetings!
I hope all of you are enjoying the summer; playing outside and eating the wonderful selection for fresh fruits and veggies available at the various farmers markets. This is the perfect time of year to embark on a healthy eating strategy. The abundance and variety of items from our local farmers can satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. It seems that preparing healthy food is often mentioned as a barrier for people to eat healthy. If this sounds like you, then please read the info below on a healthy cooking classes that will be offered by health coach , Paula Antonini. Try to sample some new healthy foods this summer and start to learn the "rhythm" of the farming season; this will help you plan your meals. For example, most lettuces, broccoli, spring onions, radishes and peas and carrots are done now, but beans, squash, tomatoes and corn are coming on strong. As for fruits, strawberries are usually early and southern peaches make it through June as well as blueberries. Now the Kentucky peaches are coming as well as blackberries. Pears and apples will be later. Don't just wait for same old favorites; try some new things and some new recipes to fix them. You may find some new healthy favorites that keep you eating at home more, saving you both money and calories and improving your health. Remember, we are not just a gym; we are your health professionals. For everyday health tips, don't forget to check out Fitness Plus on Twitter and Facebook, as well as the Fitness Plus blog. Have a great month,
Sheila

Tip #1: Bottled Water Everywhere: Keeping It Safe:
Everyday Health Consumers have a big thirst for bottled water. The International Bottled Water Association says that more than 8 billion gallons of it were consumed in the United States in 2009 alone. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled water products, working to ensure that they're safe to drink. FDA protects consumers of bottled water through the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), which makes manufacturers responsible for producing safe, wholesome, and truthfully labeled food products. "Tip #2: Snacking Healthy"
From Sparkpeople.Com
While some dieters happily accept when someone suggests a snack, others feel pangs of guilt when a nibble is merely suggested. However, there is nothing inherently wrong with a bite between meals. In fact, snacking might be the missing ingredient that will help you reach your weight loss goals. But how can this make sense, since snacking theoretically adds calories? Snacking doesn't serve to replace a meal. In fact, you should spread meals and snacks out by an hour or two, and snacks should total a couple hundred calories or less.
