From the Trainers...
|
Health, Fitness, and Technology by Gary Ditsch, Personal Trainer I love to be active. It doesn't really matter what the
activity is, just as long as it involves movement. But one thing I
enjoy as much as exercise is technology. When we can find ways to
combine exercise and technology, life gets to be really fun. Here are
two of my favorite combinations of technology and fitness right now:
DailyBurn.com and the iPhone: Dailyburn is an exercise and diet
tracking site that allows you to find others to help keep you motivated
(like me!). That's not all that groundbreaking, but when you download
their two available iPhone apps it becomes revolutionary. The best
application is their scanning diet tracker. When you eat a food or have
a drink, just pull up the scanner app on your iPhone, take a picture of
the UPC label and they'll log the food into your food diary. No longer
do you have to write things down and search through books for the
calories, fats, carbs and proteins.
TrainingPeaks.com and the iPhone: TrainingPeaks is another exercise and
diet tracking site. For an individual who logs their workouts, it has a
very detailed reporting system so you can track your health and fitness
stats.
So, you say you are not into sitting down at the computer every night
just to log your workouts. That's no problem if you have an iPhone.
FutureApps has an application called the Distance Meter. It allows you
to track your walking, jogging or biking using your phone. When you are
ready to go for a walk, pull up the app and hit the "start" button.
When you finish your workout hit the "stop" button and then "upload".
The distance, pace, time and calories burned during your workout will
all be uploaded to your TrainingPeaks log. TrainingPeaks will store the
data, but will also send an email to your trainer if you have set up
that relationship. This is a great way for you to manage your fitness,
but also an effective way to communicate with your trainer, creating
another layer of accountability. You can find that iPhone application
here.
Paper, pencil and red "X" marks worked to track your fitness in the
1900's, but now there are new and exciting ways to manage your health,
wellness and fitness. Using GPS devices, cell phone capabilities, and
innovative companies like DailyBurn and TrainingPeaks are a step
towards a healthier and fitter you. |

Spotlight on Clients
|
|
Fitness Plus client Casey Hagedorn has shared with me that she has reached a personal milestone with her trainer, Rob Sweet. She expressed to me that she has now lost 20 pounds since beginning to work with Rob in May of this year. She expressed what an important personal journey it was for her to "find herself" again, after work and life commitments had taken her away from caring for herself. In addition to her own efforts, she graciously has thanked her trainer, Rob, and Fitness Plus.
In her words, "You listened to me in regards my needs: very little time to commit and wanting the most bang for my buck. Rob is the perfect fit for these needs and a great match as a friend. Thank you so much for providing me the path back to my confidence and most important LOVING ME again!"
Casey, we at Fitness Plus applaud your efforts and thank you for your inspiration to others; congratulations.

Greetings!
Greetings. I hope everyone has had a fabulous summer full of fun, outdoor activity. As the weather gets colder and the holidays creep ever closer, it's a good time to focus on your winter workout plan.
It is harder to burn the same amount of calories during the winter months as we do in the summer months; shorter days, colder temperatures, rain, sleet, etc. all tend to drive us into the "hibernating" mode. We also tend to take in more calories during the winter months too, cooking and eating heavier foods like casseroles and stews rather than salads and fruit. This combination of fewer calories burned and more calories eaten can be a recipe for weight disaster, if you are not prepared.
Don't get caught in this seasonal trap. Start planning now for how you are going to combat this. Decide now if you are going to brave the weather and continue to walk or run outside. If so, get the right gear. If not, make plans and decide when and where you are going to do your aerobic workouts inside. Bumping up your weight training and cutting down a bit on your aerobic workouts is a good winter strategy; remember, muscle burns lots of calories, even while you are doing nothing. Increasing muscle mass and work is good way to stay trim over the winter, but you must focus on working the big, calorie burning muscles: legs, back and chest.
Plan for better winter eating now, too. Try to put 10 dinners together on paper that are healthy and appropriate for the winter months, but are not laden with cheese and sauce. See if you can stock your pantry or freezer with any of the key ingredients you need for these meals, so they are there when you need them. Planning ahead is a key to keeping your caloric intake in check; spur of the moment decisions often lead to bad ones.
Have a great month,
Sheila

What's Happening at Fitness Plus
In September we had our first trunk show with "Jockey, Person to Person" active wear. Rep. Sue Sadler brought her line into the Ashland Fitness Plus Studio for three consecutive days. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many or you commented on how much you liked the clothes and the fact that Sue helped you choose items that worked for you and helped you put outfits together. She enjoyed working with you and plans to return quarterly, as new lines of workout and casual wear come out. She will be back sometime before Christmas; I will notify all Fitness Plus clients by e-mail and put up reminders in the gym. Sue is also planning a trunk show at our Versailles studio in October, with the exacts dates to be announced.

Don't Have Too Much of a Good Thing
Diet Detective
While it's true that some foods can fight disease and may help you
live longer, many of us forget that just because a food is healthy
doesn't mean it's calorie free. In fact, eating too much of some foods
can cancel the very benefit they provide. Here is a food known for its health benefits - I'll tell you how to keep it healthy. Olive Oil
The Good: The Food and Drug Administration recently permitted a
qualified health claim to be made for olive oil. Manufacturers are now
allowed to state on the label: "Limited and not conclusive scientific
evidence suggests that eating about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive
oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the
monounsaturated fat in olive oil."
The Bad: The allowable claim goes on to say: "To achieve this possible
benefit, olive oil is to replace a similar amount of saturated fat and
not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day." Why?
Because oil has about 120 calories per tablespoon. So if you don't use
it as a replacement but add
the 2 tablespoons to your daily calories, you could put on about 25
pounds in a year! And keep in mind that "light" olive oil does not have
fewer calories - it just has a lighter color. Read More Daily Tips from DietDetective.com >>

When to Worry About Breast Lumps
Everyday Health
Though all breast lumps need to be evaluated by a trained medical professional, most are benign, especially in younger women.
First, don't panic - 80 to 85 percent of breast lumps are benign,
meaning they are noncancerous, especially in women younger than age 40.
Not only that, but if you're at an age where you've been having regular
mammograms, and if those mammograms have been negative, odds are even
better that your palpable (capable of being felt) lump is not cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Read more from EverydayHealth.com >>
