Greetings!

Can you believe it? Driving to Lucern (Switzerland) the other day, I saw trees with leaves already turning to orange. It seems the summer is over, and it is time to get back to work in earnest. But, before we do, I would like to share the highlight of my summer.

Leaning Tower of Piza
My son and I hired a camper van - no, that is not my idea of a highlight but, of course, it was his idea of heaven - and we drove down to Tuscany.

Our first stop was Florence. What a glorious city! If you have not been, I would advise adding it to your 'must see' list. This is one place you definitely have to visit, especially if you are an art lover.

While in Florence we went to visit the statue of David, and he was a fine specimen of a man to be sure. Our museum guide was wonderful. We learned a lot about David's sculptor, Michelangelo (and I promise I already knew quite a bit), and all of his foibles; so much so that we enjoyed his unfinished works that were also exhibited in the museum every bit as much as we enjoyed seeing David.

We spent a whole afternoon at the Uffizi Gallery where some of the worlds fmost famous works of art are housed. This was sensory overload on a grand scale. Seeing the people dragging themselves out of the gallery after the visit said it all. This is a place where you could spend weeks and months. An afternoon just does not do it justice.

Before I forget, if you are in Florence, don't forget to have lunch in one of the little restaurants with a view to the Ponte Vecchio. It will transport you back to another place in time.

Have you guessed where we were in the photo above? I will give you a clue. The railings behind us don't just look like they are leaning in towards us, they really are. I don't have a huge affinity for heights, but climbing to the top of the Leaning Tower in the town of Piza was worth the drop of courage and the climb it took to get to the top. The view was amazing! You know, having a lopsided view of the world is NOT ALWAYS a bad thing. :-)

Tuscany was a pure delight, and we look forward to going back to Italy in the fall when we will fly into Rome and then travel down to visit Pompeii... a place that has always fascinated me.

Summer was exciting, and it has served its purpose well. I am rejuvenated and happy to be back here with you and looking forward to the months ahead.

I have been working on some great programs to get your career on track. From educational webinars to next month's intensive networking course, there is something for everyone! Start with my article on getting smart. It will provide you with the inspiration to make the changes you need over the coming months.

Finally, before I forget, I have some good news of my own to share this month. You will find that in my final article.

There's a time and a place for everything. The same can be true when it comes to being smart. This is not about being dumb, but rather about being aware that there are many times in life when it pays to not be the smartest one in the group.

If you're the one who is always leading the way, if you're always called upon to solve everyone's problems and to provide wise counsel, then you're in the wrong group. I'm not saying you can't be a part of this group, but this shouldn't be a template for every formal or informal group or situation with which you're involved.

Why? You're not being nurtured. You're not benefiting from mentorship - from learning from others. You're not growing as fast as you could be. I'm not saying you should quit all of your groups or implying that you should step down from leadership roles. I'm saying that it's important to be part of a group where you're not, as they say, "the smartest gal or guy in the room."

The fastest way to success - however you define it - is to surround yourself with the types of people you most want to be like. I'm not saying you want to take over their lives, copycat their styles, or steal anything that is theirs. Instead, you want to learn the ropes - you want great advice, you want to learn more so you can be more and do more. Well, the only way you're going to get that is by finding someone who knows all of this. You need to find someone smarter or with more experience than you.

If you seek out others who have more knowledge and expertise, you'll grow, flourish, and move faster and easier towards accomplishing your goals. Listen, ask questions, take in their wisdom, and most importantly, take action.

Consider joining a new group where you aren't going to be the one with all the answers - where you won't be the expert. Be a participant, and surround yourself with great minds from which you can learn new things. Associate with people who are currently enjoying success in a way you enjoy - whether it's by being a great community leader, someone who gives back to others, a great communicator, or even a financial success. The less you know, the more you'll learn and the faster you'll grow.

Learn how to REALLY be Smart, go to the bottom of the class!

I am honored to have been added to the slate for the
ICF Board of Directors 2009

(The following is a copy of an International Coach Federation Communication)

ICF 2009 Board of Directors Slate

After several weeks of intense discussion, a strenuous interview schedule, and careful consideration, the 2008 ICF Nominating Committee has proposed a slate of individuals to fill the open president-elect and director positions on the 2009 global ICF Board of Directors. The slate includes six ICF Credentialed coaches from three countries.
Seventeen candidates from five countries submitted applications this year, reflective of the international make-up of ICF's membership.

The candidate review process is quite rigorous. This year's talented Nominating Committee strove to maintain the highest ethical standards to ensure the integrity of the review process, which includes: a rigorous review of applications, an analysis of the entire Board of Directors demographics, strategically focused candidate interviews, and sincere consideration leading to consensus.

The ICF Nominating Committee recommends the following credentialed members for president-elect and open director positions on the 2009 global Board:

President-Elect: Giovanna D'Alessio, MCC, Italy

Directors At Large (Terms Expiring 2011):
Ira Dressner, PCC, USA;
Janet Harvey, PCC, USA;
Krissy Jackson, ACC, Switzerland;
Ed Modell, PCC, USA;
Pat Obuchowski, ACC, USA

Next Steps:
August 11-September 11: Beginning today, there is a 30-day window for the filing of petitions, which allows for any qualified member not on the proposed slate to place his or her name in nomination by going through the petition process. View more information on the petition process.

September 12: The official ICF ballot will be announced to the membership.
September 12-October 2: Online voting will be available for all ICF Credentialed members.
October 10: Newly elected officers and Board members will be announced.
November 13: Newly elected officers and Board members will be introduced at the ICF Annual Business Meeting during the Annual International Conference in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
January 1, 2009: The new leaders will officially take office.

PS: Next month I will be talking about setting boundaries in the workplace.

If you sometimes feel like you are the office mouse...
If you worry that you are not taken seriously at work...
If you are afraid to speak out when the situation calls...
Or, if you lie in bed at night kicking yourself for being so timid...

This one is for you!
