2010 Maryland Primary Election
Long time readers will recall how often we drive home the message about getting out the vote, and that every vote counts. With the lowest voter turnout in history, the 2010 Maryland Primary was a classic example of how much each vote counts.
Here are some examples of races determined by an incredibly small number of votes:
District 3A: Scott Rolle prevailed over Chuck Huckenpoeler by a margin of 9 votes. (both candidates are pro-2nd Amendment)
District 4A: Incumbent Paul Stull lost to challenger Kelly Schulz by 6 votes. (both candidates are pro-2nd Amendment)
District 9A: Pro 2nd Amendment incumbent Susan Krebs won her 3rd re-match with challenger Larry Helminiak by a margin of 72 votes.
District 34A: Right to Carry sponsor, B. Daniel Riley lost by 57 votes to challenger Marla Posey-Moss. Little is known about Posey-Moss, but the general consensus seems to be that, if elected, she will not be a friend to gun owners.
###
Other races were not so close. In District 19, incumbent Senator Michael Lenett, sponsor of numerous draconian gun bills lost to challenger Delegate Roger Manno. While we are not sorry to see Lenett defeated, this is not a victory for gun owners.
Like Neil Quinter, Michael Lenett was a fanatical gun control advocate but he shared Quinter's inability to build a network of supporters. Lenett's dogmatic, loose cannon approach was an embarrassment to many liberals which degraded his ability to get his anti-gun legislation passed.
Except for also being anti-gun, Roger Manno is the opposite of Lenett. He is a smart politician and he has the ability to build a liberal consensus on issues.
Early on, the outcome of the Lenett-Manno contest was never in doubt to anyone who was not living on the dark side of the moon. AGC opted to conserve resources and stay out of the fray; choosing instead to watch as an increasingly dirty campaign developed. A campaign complete with name calling, arguments over who is the most anti-gun candidate and occasional derogatory remarks about the Republicans.
###
In Districts 2 and 7 we opted to make no recommendation because all of the candidates were very supportive of the 2nd Amendment and we believed it best to let the voters decide which pro 2nd Amendment candidate they preferred.

2010 Maryland General Election
In many Legislative Districts, the Primary Election was THE election, in that the incumbents faced absolutely no opposition whatsoever, and will have none in the General Election.
Other Districts will be far more challenging where gun owners are concerned. In a "normal" election, gun rights groups generally support even a reasonably pro 2nd Amendment experienced incumbent with a pro gun voting record and connections in Annapolis, over a new untested fire breathing pro 2nd Amendment challenger.
This year, the General Election will be anything but normal, and the stakes are higher. We are currently studying the Senate candidates and their voting records in a number of Districts.
During the last 4 years, Martin O'Malley contented himself with completely rolling back the very small gains we made with the concealed carry permit policies during the Ehrlich years and replacing them with even more restrictive policies. If re-elected, O'Malley will be term limited out in 4 years and thus free to act without regard to political consequences at the polls.
The obvious answer to the threat of an administration backed gun control initiative is to elect candidates to the Senate who will be unlikely to succumb to a "party call" vote to end a filibuster, or who are members of the minority party and thus not beholding to a "party call" vote by Senate President Mike Miller.
This concept and strategy will be explored further in the next issue.

Candidate Recommendations - 2010 Maryland General Election
We have compiled the list of winners in the primary election and diligently working on final recommendations for the candidate we believe are best qualified and positioned to protect our 2nd Amendment Rights during the next 4 years.
Email notification will be sent when the recommendations are available but no less than 2 weeks before early voting begins on October 28, 2010.

UPDATE: The Politics of Palin - Endorsement Tracker
The
Washington Post website dedicated to tracking what has become
known as the "Palin Effect" on political campaigns with regard to
candidates endorsed by Sarah Palin has been updated.
Palin has now endorsed 44
candidates for various political offices. As the primary elections
progress, 26 endorsed candidates have won, 11 have lost. Notable among the losses was Brian Murphy's effort to capture the GOP nomination for Governor of Maryland. Palin endorsed candidates still enjoy a 2.36 to 1 success ratio. However, it is unclear how much of the credit for these wins should go to Palin's endorsement and how much credit should go to the tea party activist voters.
