Candidate Surveys Are In the Mail
As of August 10th, the 2010 Election candidate surveys are in the mail to all 519 Maryland General Assembly candidates registered for the primary election on September 14, 2010.
An additional 126 surveys have been mailed to the candidates for Governor, Comptroller, Attorney General (Doug Gansler is unopposed but we didn't want him to feel left out) Circuit Court Judges, as well as Federal Senate and Congressional candidates.
We have asked the candidates to respond by August 19, 2010 in order to give us time to evaluate the responses and compile our recommendations.
Who are the "we"?
"We" are (in alphabetical order): Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore, Maryland Shall Issue, Maryland State Rifle & Pistol Association and the Washington County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs.
In past elections we have all done candidate surveys with varying degrees of success. Many candidates did not respond simply because they were overwhelmed by the number of surveys they received. To address this issue, and demonstrate the solidarity among the major gun rights groups in Maryland, we opted to send a single survey.
To date, over 175 responses have been received and the monumental task of tabulating the results is in progress.
Recommendations on which candidates deserve our support will be published prior to the September Primary Election. Following the primary we will then re-evaluate the candidates who won in the Primary Election and make recommendations for the General Election in November.
Click here to view a "PDF" copy of the survey.

Virginia Attorney General Says "Yes, we can" to Investigating Illegal Aliens
Robert G. Marshall, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates requested an official advisory opinion from Virginia's Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, II. Delegate Marshall inquired whether Virginia law enforcement officers, under present Virginia state law, may conduct investigations into the immigration status of persons stopped or arrested by law enforcement and, specifically, whether Virginia officials presently have the same authority as Arizona officers under a recently enacted Arizona statute, and, further, whether that authority extends to Virginia state park personnel and local zoning officials.
Attorney General Cuccinelli responded: ..."it is my opinion that Virginia law enforcement officers, including conservation officers, may, like Arizona police officers, inquire into the immigration status of persons stopped or arrested; however, persons tasked with enforcing zoning laws lack the authority to investigate criminal violations of the law, including criminal violations of the immigration laws of the United States.

Second Amendment Foundation Sues Maryland
The Second Amendment Foundation and noted attorney Alan Gura have filed suit on behalf of Ray Woollard of Hampstead, MD.
Mr. Woollard was denied a handgun permit by the Maryland State Police on the grounds the Mr. Woollard has not be attacked recently enough to qualify for an permit to carry a handgun.
We wish to commend our colleagues at Maryland Shall Issue (MSI) for their recent "Money Bomb" operation which in MSI raised and donated $10,000 to support the Second Amendment Foundation and its efforts to defend the rights of gun owners nationwide. Well done, MSI!

Gun Runners Supplying Mexican Drug Gangs Have Little to Fear
The President of Mexico and many US lawmakers are calling for more restrictions on guns and guns sales to stem the flow of US firearms to Mexican drug gangs. Gun trafficking is a lucrative business with little overhead and little to fear if caught. Case in point:The United States Embassy in Mexico recently issued a press release touting the conviction and sentencing of the leaders of a gun running operation supplying hundreds of firearms to a Mexican drug gang. This would be better news if the sentences were not so laughable. One convicted leader received a 48 month sentence and another received a whopping 50 month sentence. No mention is made of what sentence the underlings received. However, when one considers the slap on the wrist the leaders received, the underlings probably received sentences that amounted to denial of Starbucks coffee for a whole week. It appears that the best the ATF could do was get convictions on "straw
purchases". Apparently, smuggling, gun running and illegal exportation
of illegally obtained firearms with intent to sell to known criminals is not an issue with the ATF. Click here to read the U.S. Embassy press release. |
