Starting tonight, SFJAZZ presents bassist Marcus Miller at the Herbst Theater... brilliant, funky and you feel how he feels the music, Marcus Miller is bass supreme!
By merging Latin music with R&B tunes in the late 60's, "Latin Soul" was officially born by the creator Joe Bataan.
When you are at the top of your game, achieve great success there is always room for criticisms and Mr. Bataan did face several. Perhaps it was envy and jealousy of Bataan's success, these critics felt Mr. Bataan's music was not truly salsa because of the English lyrics. Who said it was salsa? It was Latin Soul. The criticisms may have been prompted when people learned Mr. Bataan was not Puerto Rican descent. Despite the criticisms, Bataan achieved his dreams and fulfilled that awesome vision of merging Latin music with Rhythm and Blues. He rightfully deserves the title " THE LATIN SOUL KING AND KING OF LATIN FUNK"
He wrote it, he sang it, he lived it and he was the creator. Joe Bataan not only was a singer, a musician and a song writer but he was also a producer. He produced a couple of LPs in the early 70's from an extraordinary record label called Ghetto Records. One of the famous 1972 Latin Soul song that sprung forth from this label was " Tender Love (and Sweet caresses)" by Paul Ortiz Y La Orquesta Son that was remade in 1992 by Latin Pop artist Tino Nieves. Ghetto Records was indeed an extraordinary record label. The salsa from this label was not the ordinary salsa people were accustom to. It was sort of like Latin Salsa Blues, with a rock stylish electric and soul rhythm vocals. That's the best I can describe it. La Fantastica and Joe Acosta Orchestra were two recording artist from this label that will give you that extraordinary sound that was never heard during that time. Incredibly, the record label was producing awesome Latin Soul, Northern Soul and phenomenal Salsa artists, however this record label was short-lived. Purchase Tickets Here!

The '70s Mission All-Stars will headline Saturday night's concert, paying homage to the amazing musical scene that sprouted in San Francisco's Mission district in the 1970s. Featuring renowned San Francisco musicians from that era, this all-star band of veteran players will pay tribute to the music that they themselves began pioneering during the late '70s. Members of the band include Karl Perazzo from the Carlos Santana band; Dr. John Calloway, recipient of the 2012 "Jazz Hero" award; master bassist David Belove; renowned producer Dr. Greg Landau; legendary singer Linda Tillery; violin virtuoso Anthony Blea (interview); and more.
In contrast to this veteran group, the next generation of exceptional Latin Jazz musicians will be represented by the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco, under the musical direction of Dr. John Calloway. Composed of young musicians aged 10 to 18, the LJYE has gained a reputation of excellence based on the group's high standards of musicianship and musicality. This group of talented youth is sure to be a highlight of the Mission Latin Jazz Festival.
The Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble will perform a special tribute to Latin Jazz great Ray Barretto, featuring top local musicians including Danilo Paíz, Marty Wehner, Chloe Scott, Saul Sierra, Marco Diaz and more.

Pacific Mambo Orchestra is a full 20-piece Latin Big Band, complete with fat sax, trombone, trumpet and percussion sections. The sound of the old-school Mambo band is back, but with a modern twist.
Laura Rebolloso, one of the founders of legendary Son Jarocho group Son de Madera, is coming in from Mexico with her Ensemble Marinero, an excursion into Mexican-Jazz and an exploration of the boundaries of the very meaning of Latin Jazz. Featuring a pair of Nuyorican visionaries and a duo of rising Cuban stars, this double-bill offers a glimpse at both the past and future of Latin jazz. Introduced to Afro-Caribbean music by their father, renowned singer Jerry Gonzalez Sr., the Gonzalez brothers have been two of the most influential musicians in Latin jazz since the early 1970s.Jerry Gonzalez gained essential knowledge as a percussionist with Latin jazz patriarchs Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Palmieri and Tito Puente. He joined forces with his bassist brother Andy Gonzalez in Conjunto Libre, a band Andy co-led with timbales master Manny Oquendo. But the brothers made their biggest impact with Jerry on trumpet, leading the Fort Apache Band, which helped pave the way for the onslaught of Latin American talent that has energized the US jazz scene since.
This SFJAZZ date marks their first major appearance as a duo. Opening the concert are two Cuban-born, New York-based masters: Elio Villafranca, a Grammy-nominated pianist, teams up with percussionist Arturo Stable. Together they have performed widely as Dos y Mas, a superb world-jazz duo that has recently released their debut album. Video. To Purchase Tickets Click Here.
Thursday October 25 SF JAZZ presents Gilberto Gil at the Paramount Theater! Forró Party!
From musical revolutionary to international pop star to beloved statesman, Gilberto Gil has lived a life worthy of a Hollywood thriller. As a founding member of Brazil's Tropicália movement, Gil and fellow Bahians Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa radically reinvented Brazilian popular music in the mid-60s by combining Beatlesque psychedelia, art rock and Brazil's northeastern roots rhythms. Since returning to Brazil from his London exile in the early 1970s, Gil has held center stage as a charismatic performer, songwriter and interpreter of the music of Bob Marley. With several dozen standards to his credit, he has been interpreted by just about every major Brazilian artist of the past four decades. In recent years Gil once again found inspiration in the joyful, upbeat accordion driven forró style of music and dance, starting with his soundtrack to the award-winning 2000 film Me You Them. After serving as Brazil's Minister of Culture from 2003-2008, he went on to explore classics by forró heroes Luiz Gonzaga and Jackson do Pandeiro on his latest album, Fé Na Festa- Ao Vivo. Expect a party - and expect to dig deeply into Brazil's musical heritage with one of the country's major cultural icons. Video. To Purchase Tickets Click Here. I have FOUR pairs of tickets to give away to this spectacular show. Tell me what you love about Gilberto Gil - please be the 1st, 18, 20 and 24th persons to email me to win! Once again thank you for supporting LIVE MUSIC and the COMMUNITY that brings it to you! Peace through music, Stephanie
