Greetings!
There is some amazing shows coming up in the month of September - I love the Bay Area this time of year - so get out and enjoy - and also please look for the highlights in RED as these are your chances to win FREE TICKETS OR FREE EVENTS!
Tonight you can catch John Santos 5th lecture in the series CRIOLLA Y SABROSA: LA MÚSICA PUERTORRIQUEÑA presented by Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, SFJAZZ and the Museum of African Diaspora. Tonight's discussion: New York: Little Puerto Rico held at the MoAD from 7 - 9pm - Tickets available here. Puerto Rican emigration to New York from the outset of the 20th century had an indelible effect on Puerto Rican music. New York-based companies such as Columbia, Victor, and Brunswick made most of the early recordings of Puerto Rican music in New York.
From Jazz to Soul you can catch Billy White and the Quiet Ones at the Red Poppy Art House tomorrow, Thursday Aug 30. Singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist-producer Billy White has had an interesting musical journey. An award-winning jazz pianist, Ethnomusicologist, collaborator with top-flight jazz musicians, and backup keyboardist for artists like Grammy nominees Maiysha Kai and Bilal, he has been writing, singing and playing original material to great acclaim at venues on both coasts. Fans eagerly await the release of his debut non-jazz EP, expected in September.
Also on Thursday in the East Bay at Ashkenaz you can catch the terrific Orquesta Dharma featuring bandleader and trombonist Jamie Dubberly! This show is a celebration of the music from their award-winning debut CD, "Road Warrior." The recording bursts with Afro-Cuban Latin jazz tunes and luminescent playing topped by an incisive horn section. It was voted "2011 Next Generation Latin Jazz Album of the Year" by Latin Jazz Corner. In the April 2012 issue of Latin Beat, Rudy Mangual wrote, "The Northern California-based trombonist /composer /arranger / educator Jamie Dubberly displays good vibes via the up-tempo ambiance and brilliantly tight arrangements of 'Road Warrior,' his debut as bandleader and record producer... a distinctively refreshing and powerful sound."
"Road Warrior" album was a labor of love that Dubberly painstakingly recorded in San Francisco over a period of three years, while he played in such bands as Avance and Mazacote. His Orquesta Dharma is bassist Sam Bevan, pianist Andy Nevala, drummer Brian Andres, singer-percussionists Carlos Caro and Omar Ledezma, and saxophonist-flutist Pete Cornell.
Also at the Red Poppy Art House, the sound of Old Havana can be heard Friday night with Tito y su Son de Cuba Quinteto. Tito's boleros are sensuously bittersweet when sung in his smooth baritone voice. The full-bodied melodic mix of "call and response" between the piano, vocals, congas and horns commands the listener's attention. From the first blast of the horns in "Busco a Alguien," you'll be musically transported to Havana, hips swaying under the shade of a palm tree, until the final piano riff in "Evocacion." Tito is a second-generation heir of Buena Vista Social Club. He studied with Buena Vista Social Club tres master, Papi Oviedo, and with the greatest guitarist in Cuba, Octavio Sanchez Cotan.
Also on Friday, the LUNADA Literary Lounge and Open Mic awaits you at Galleria de la Raza at 2857 24th Street (at Bryant) in the heart of the Mission!
