For a one time only performance, presented by Aquarium of the Bay and The Bay Institute, on Pier 39, Best of West Coast Roots Music: Blues, Jazz, Latin Jazz and Gospel! Featuring musicians: co-musical directors Glen Pearson and 5x GRAMMY® nominated Wayne Wallace along with John Calloway, Faye Carol, David Flores, Terrance Kelly, Melecio Magdaluyo, Mike Olmos, Marcus Shelby and special guest and 5x GRAMMY® nominated master percussionist John Santos! Aquarium of the Bay partners with The Bay Institute to protect, restore and inspire conservation of the San Francisco Bay, from the Sierra to the the sea. Their passion and work are locally focused, but have a broad impact that touches upon every major challenge facing our global environment.

Glen Pearson - Piano, Musical Director

Pianist Glen Pearson has brought sensitivity and expression to the widest variety of music imaginable. His performances on stage, television, radio, and in the recording studios have included his well known position as principle keyboardist for Regina Belle, as well as pianist and orchestrator with such notables as Jimmy Scott, Ernestine Anderson, Dianne Reeves, Marlena Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson, Delfeayo Marsalis, James Moddy, Frank Morgan, Chico Freeman and Will Downing. Mr. Pearson also served eleven years as the Musical/Band Director for the world renowned Boy's Choir of Harlem.

 

Glen's recording credits are numerous, most notably an award winning jazz album by percussionist Babatundae Lea. He has also appeared both on record and in videos with Will Downing and Gerald Albright. He has worked both on and off Broadway with Savion Glover, Gregorgy Hines, Arthur Miller, Patrick Stewart and George Wolfe.

Wayne Wallace - Trombone, Musical Director

Five-time Grammy nominee, WAYNE WALLACE, is one of the more respected exponents of African American-Latin music in the world today. He is known for the use of traditional forms and styles in combination with contemporary music, and has earned recognition with his recent placement in the Downbeat Critics Polls under the trombone and producer categories.

 

Mr. Wallace has performed, recorded and studied with acknowledged masters of the Afro-Latin and Jazz idioms such as Aretha Franklin, Bobby Hutcherson, Earth Wind and Fire, Pete Escovedo, Santana, Julian Priester, Conjunto Libre, Whitney Houston,Tito Puente, Steve Turre, John Lee Hooker, Con-funk-shun, Francisco Aguabella, Manny Oquendo and Libre, Max Roach, the Count Basie Orchestra and Orestes Vilató.

David Belove - Bass

 

david beloveA Kansas City native, David Belove relocated to San Francisco in 1973 and soon became the Bay Area's most prominent Latin and Brazilian bassist. He has recorded, performed or toured with Pete and Sheila Escovedo, Tito Puente, John Santos and the the Machete Ensemble, Rebeca Mauleón, Francisco Aguabella, Jovino Santos Neto, Edgardo Cambon y Candela, Rolando Morales, Ray Obiedo, Homenagem Brasiliera, Wayne Wallace, The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and many more. David has also worked with Jazz artists including Joe Henderson, Blue Mitchell, Eddie Harris, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Danilo Perez, Mark Levine, Mark Murphy and Pat Metheny. Also an educator, David teaches at the Jazz School in Berkeley, Ca., at Jazz Camp West, the Jazz In the Middle program for SF Jazz, and he is an adjunct faculty member at Mills College. In addition, he teaches bass privately at his studio in Oakland where he also works on his photography and graphics projects.

John Calloway - Flute

 

Calloway is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, educator and a cornerstone of the Bay Area Latin and world music scenes since the 1970s. Adept at flute, piano, and percussion, John has collaborated with a who's-who of Bay Area jazz and Latin jazz innovators, including Jesus Diaz, Pete Escovedo, Mark Levine, Rebeca Mauleon, Marcus Shelby, Larry Vukovich and Wayne Wallace, along with his essential work as a collaborator for over three decades with five-time GRAMMY® nominee John Santos.

 

He's also performed with such internationally known artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Los Van Van, Orlando "Maraca" Valle, Max Roach, Arturo Sandoval, Omar Sosa and Israel "Cachao" Lopez. www.johncalloway.com

Faye Carol - Jazz, Blues and Gospel Vocals

Faye Carol's unique style and gift of connecting with her audience is astonishing. This Bay Area living legend remains true to her Mississippi roots infusing the blues into everything from Cole Porter to Michelle Legrand songs. She began singing while still a young girl in Meridian and later relocated to Northern California where she became immersed in gospel music and in the 1960s her professional career began by being an integral part of the innovative funk scene in Oakland, CA.
 
Miss Carol continues to lead her group and collaborate with other artists: Charles Brown, David Murray, Ray Charles, Billy Higgins, Steve Turre, Albert King, Bobby Hutcherson, Pharaoh Sanders, Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Tootie Heath and Ben Vereen. Now, she can be heard with The Marcus Shelby Orchestra, Howard Wiley & The Angola Project, Sista Kee & IOP, and Mal Sharpe's Big Money in Jazz Band.

Dave Flores - Drumsdavid flores

 

Versatile drummer/percussionist, David Flores, is recognized for his musical versatility, sensitivity, and groove. His skillfulness to swing Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Calypso, Rhythm and Blues, and odd metered Prog Rock has seen David in music venues from Fresno to Europe, Asia, South and North America and has established him as an in-demand sideman.

 

Playing both drum-set and hand percussion, David has been hired to play with a diverse list of artists and producers including; Lauryn Hill, Donna Summer, Barbara Dane, Armando Peraza, Orestes Vilato, John Santos, Bobbi Cespedes, Jesus Diaz, Pete Escovedo, Carol Steel, Arturo Sandoval, Larry Harlow, Steve Turre, Melvin Seals, Mickey Hart, Jorge Santana, Jovino Santo-Neto, Ziba Shirazi, Mary Wilson, Greg Landau, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Legally Blynd, Los Mocosos, and Ska Cubano.  With enthusiasm and the desire to create music, David is continually inspired to share his musical experience with students.  Working with K-12, college students, and adults, David is an educator and co-producer developing curriculums, music performances, and music education programs.  His credits include Santa Clara University, the San Jose Jazz Society, Jazz Camp West, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, Groove Academy of Drumming, the Vic Firth Educational Team, and Los Gatos High School. 

Terrance Kelly - Gospel Vocalsterrance kelly

 

Mr. Kelly has garnered extensive musical credentials in both gospel and jazz music.  His operatic range and joyous emotional feel for the music make him a popular soloist as well as an accomplished director, composer and arranger.  His credits include choral arrangements on albums by Linda Ronstadt and the Kronos Quartet, and gospel arrangements of popular music for TV and video soundtracks.  In addition, he wrote or arranged most of the music for each of the choir's three albums.  Mr. Kelly received an Emmy Award in 1995 for his choral arrangement of the OIGC's KGO-TV public service announcement.  In 2003 and 1997, he received the Gospel Music Academy Award for Best Director.  In 1999, he performed as a soloist with the Louie Bellson Big Band at the San Francisco Jazz Festival presentation of Orchestral Ellington:  A Centennial Celebration.  In February 2005, Mr. Kelly received a "Local Heroes" Award from KQED Television for this directorship of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Youth Choir.  Also, The Academy of Gospel Music honored him in June 2005 for Excellence in Sacred Choral Music.

 

Mr. Kelly has directed the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir since 1986.  He currently serves as Artistic Director, and also directs both the adult and youth choirs.  He is Minister of Magnification at Imani Community Church and was formerly Professor of Music for the Foothill Community College Gospel Choir.  Mr. Kelly has been a favorite teacher at Rhythmic Concept's annual Jazz Camp since 1982.  He also travels world wide to teach gospel music workshops.  In 1998, he took part in the International Music Festival in Sydney, Australia, as a judge and member of the faculty.  Mr. Kelly is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and served as a Board Member for one year.  He is also a member of the Northern California Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and chorus America.  In addition to his other endeavors, he is currently a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus.

Melecio Magdaluyo - Saxophones and FluteMelecio Magdaluyo

 

Extraordinary saxophonist/flautist, Melecio Magdaluyo, is a multi-instrumentalist (soprano sax, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, clarinet, flute, piano, percussion) and educator active in the vibrant San Francisco music scene since the mid 1970s and teaching in public school district since the mid-1990s. He is a founding member of John Santos' Machete Ensemble (1985), and is one of the most solicited freelance recording and performing musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area. Melecio has recoreded and performed with The Whispers, Con-Funk-Shun, Tito Puente, Pete Escovedo, Sheila E., and M.C. Hammer.

Mike Olmos - Trumpetmike olmos

 

Mike Olmos has become one of the most in demand jazz musicians since his arrival to San Francisco 10 years ago. A versatile trumpet player, Mike has been performing with various bands such as the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Realistic Orchestra, Brass Mafia, The Jazz Mafia Hip-Hop Symphony, John Calloway and Joe Bagale.

 

His performing/recording credits include: Etta James, Rosemary Clooney, The Glide Ensemble, Mary Stallings, Lavay Smith, Marcus Shelby, Paul Hanson, Joe Bagale, Israel "Cahao" Lopez, John Calloway, Jesus Diaz y su QBA, Zion I, Orestes Vilato, Tito Nieves, Pete Escovedo, Josh Jones, Thomas Dolby, Lyrics Born, Akria Tana, Zigaboo Modelise, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Michael Brecker, Mel Martin and many more.

John Santos - Percussionist

Five-time Grammy nominee and US Artist Fontanals Fellow, John Santos, is a major bandleader, composer, producer, percussionist, and educator in Afro-Latin music with a four-decade professional career. He has performed and/or recorded with masters such as Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Cachao, Eddie Palmieri,Patato Valdés, Francisco Aguabella, Omar Sosa, Susana Baca, Lalo Schifrin, McCoy Tyner, Batacumbele, Giovani Hidalgo, Armando Peraza, Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintana, Bebo Valdés, and Carlos Santana.  He is a faculty member at the Berkeley Jazz School and the College of San Mateo as well as Jazz Camp West and the Afro-Cuban Drum and Dance Program at Humboldt State University in California. John has also lectured extensively and conducted countless clinics in the United States, Europe and Latin America since the 70s, including such prestigious institutions as Yale, Stanford, UCLA, the Manhattan School of Music, the Museum of the African Diaspora, and the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He was founder and director (1985-2006) of the internationally renowned, Grammy-nominated Machete Ensemble, and currently directs the Cubadisco-nominated, John Santos Sextet and the two-time Grammy nominee, Coro Folklorico Kindembo. Marcus Shelby - Acoustic Bass

Marcus Anthony Shelby is an accomplished teacher, composer, arranger, and bassist who currently lives in San Francisco, California. Over the past 20 years, he has built a diverse biography. From 1990-1996, Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note and is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Hot 7, and The Marcus Shelby Trio. Shelby was awarded a 2009 Black Metropolis Research Consortium Fellowship in Chicago for summer 2009 to conduct research for his commission to compose "Soul of the Movement". Shelby,  a 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University to conduct research for his commission to compose "Harriet Tubman". Shelby also has had the honor of arranging for and conducting the Count Basie Orchestra featuring Ledisi, performing with Tom Waits, and receiving the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the "Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area". As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby's studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Shelby is also very active in music education and currently teaches at Rooftop Alternative School in San Francisco, the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University, and also the Oakland Public Conservatory.

Jesse "Chuy" Varela is Music Director at public radio station KCSM 91.1 FM in San Mateo, CA, the Bay Area's jazz station. You can hear him on Sunday afternoons from 2-6pm hosting "The Latin Jazz Show," and on Mon. & Tues., from 2-6pm, with "Jazz in the Afternoon." Varela is also a freelance writer and has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, Jazz Times, Latin Beat and many other publications. 

 

Varela has been awarded a Bob Geddins Lifetime Achievement Award by the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame in Oakland, a Music in Excellence Award from the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and a Salsa Ambassador Award from the West Coast Salsa Congress in Los Angeles. Most recently Chuy Varela was honored with a Community Award from the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies in San Jose.  www.kcsm.org
