Ray Obiedo Group The Horns, Rhythm & Vocals of the Carlos Santana Band featuring...
Dave Mathews - Piano, Karl Perrazo - Timbales, Jeff Cressman - Trombone, Tony Lindsay - Vocals
Contemporary jazz composer and guitarist Ray Obiedo had an eclectic musical background during his youth, spent in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Here the sounds of Miles Davis, Henry Mancini, Antonio Carlos Jobim and the imported soul and pop of Motown Records influenced his early musical persona.
Probably the greatest influence on his embryonic career, however, was the James Brown revue, whose funky, percussive guitar sound was the platform on which Obiedo built his technique. He joined organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith on a U S tour in 1974, then ECM Records trombonist Julian Priester on his first European outing in 1977. Ray also started his long association with the great Pete Escovedo which continues today.
His own fusion band, Kick, included a young Sheila E. on drums and Sonny Rollins associate Mark Soskin on keyboards. In the mid 80s his reputation grew as one of California's finest exponents of jazz, pop and fusion. His other outlet during this time was the pop-rock vehicle Rhythmus 21, wherein he worked with other prominent session musicians from the Bay Area. His own session experience is considerable, having partnered artists including Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Lou Rawls, Grover Washington Jr., Bill Summers, Brenda Russel and The Whispers.
Joining him will be a number of special guests such as DAVE MATHEWS, a known pianist and is the current keyboard player with Santana, has appeared on 7 of Etta James' recordings, such as Life, Love and the Blues (Grammy nominee), Heart of a Woman (Grammy nominee) Matriarch of the Blues (Grammy nominee) and Burnin' Down the House Live at the House of Blues (Grammy nominee). Known in the bay area as an eclectic musician with the ability to play many musical styles in an idiomatically correct fashion, Dave has worked and/or recorded with a number of diverse artists.
KARL PERRAZO, born and raised in San Francisco's Mission District, has gone on to play with the best in Pop, Jazz, Rock and Latin Music. The self-taught musician is currently playing with the Santana Band. He has recorded 3 albums with Santana, one being a Live album in South America. He has also recorded and played with Malo, Jorge Santana, Cal Tjader, Dizzy Gilespie, Andy Narrel, Ray Obiedo, Tom Coster, Pete and Coke Escovedo, Dennis Chambers, Sheila E., The Artist, Mariah Carey, Paquito D' Rivera and is on the latest John Lee Hooker album.
JEFF CRESSMAN is a native of San Francisco who began playing trombone in the same Berkeley Public School Jazz Project that encouraged such contemporaries as Peter Apfelbaum, Benny Green and Joshua Redman. Jeff first recorded with Santana on the "Supernatural" album and then appeared on the Supernatural 2000 world tour including performing in the 2000 Grammy awards telecast and "Supernatural Live - An Evening with Carlos Santana and Friends" television special and DVD. Jeff's recent musical projects include a new CD release "Mondo Rama" with Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra for Narada Records, the Playboy Latin Jazz Christmas CD with Sheila E. and Pete Escovedo, "Madre Rumba, Padre Son" with Edgardo Cambon's Candela and "Round Trip" with Rebeca Mauleon.
The incredible silky, smooth and soulful vocals of TONY LINDSAY, who is back in the SANTANA lineup. Tony Lindsay has 11 Grammy's on his mantle after spending 20 years as Santana's lead vocalist. He has traveled on several world tours and recorded on seven CDs: Milagro (1992), Supernatural (1999), Shaman (2002), Ceremony (2003) and Food for Thought (2004), Ultimate Santana (2007) and Multi-Dimensional Warrior (2008).

SILA!

DJ Aztec Parrot (Radio 2050)
"Mixing the legendary sounds of Fela Kuti with some tricks gleaned from James Brown and P-Funk,Sila and company create a dancefloor-ready throb guaranteed to move you." - San Francisco Weekly
Kenyan native SILA has been called a "Kenyan funk master" (San Francisco Chronicle) and "Africa's James Brown" (Oakland Post), SILA draw inspiration from Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti while distinguishing themselves by incorporating African genres such as zouk and soukous, as well as the music of Western artists including Sly Stone and Funkadelic. Black President finds the ensemble moving further toward progress and change in both their lives and their music, with blossoming musical chemistry, deep funky Afro-grooves and strong socially-conscious, politically-aware lyrics.
SILA began writing material for Black President CD prior to the November 2008 election of President Barack Obama. The prospect of the first African-American U.S. president raised hopes not only in America but internationally as well. As Sila explains many Africans believe that Obama is African and he owns his lineage and heritage to Africa. He is a son of Africa; it is in his heart and in the blood of his children. His roots are in Kenya. Obama's historic victory, and the promise that holds for U.S. African relations, is depicted in the album cover art by painter Jarrod Eastman, which shows a casually dressed and relaxed Obama holding Africa in his hands, the continent illuminated from the inside by the sun Barack Obama, James Brown and Fela Kuti offer an iconic trinity of musical, cultural, political and ideological influences on Black President.
Like Kuti, Sila connects personal issues with larger social and political ideas, and echoes of classic Afrobeat are evident in the Afrofunk Experience's call-and response choruses, highly syncopated percussion, blazing horns and incessant grooves. Brown's inspiration can be heard in Sila's shrieks and screams as well as the band's punchy horns, chicken-scratch guitar and funky bass lines. In the title track, the band chugs along with a locomotive-like groove while Sila riffs on the imperative for change which swept Obama to victory. Other emotionally-charged songs address the global AIDS epidemic, neo-colonialism and political corruption, tribalism in African society and warmongering among Western nations, and explore influences from kinky reggae to Latin-tinged rhythms to Motown-y pop/soul styling's.
A musical and artistic breakthrough, Black President reflects a deeper realization of the band's ever-evolving identity. To paraphrase Fela's famous credo, SILA want to use music as a weapon for peace and cultural education. "My goal on the album was to reach out to the younger generation, who has never heard of Baaba Maal or Youssou N'Dour," Sila explains. "I want to make African music hip to young people."
SILA won "Outstanding World Music Album" at the 2010 NAACP image Awards, 2009 San Francisco Weekly Music Awards for "Best International act" and has played such prestigious events as the inaugural Outside Lands Music Festival, Stern Grove Festival, Fillmore Jazz Festival (headliners for five years in a row including at the 25th Annual festival occurring on July 4 & 5, 2009), and Berkeley Jazz Music Festival. The band's current lineup consists of tenor saxophonist Roger Cox, bassist Mike Shiono guitarist Khalil Doak-Anthony, drummer Bennie Murray, trombonist Andre Webb, and master African percussionists Karamba Kouyate (from Guinea) and Samba Guisse (from Senegal).
In keeping with his mission to combine music with humanitarian efforts, SILA has for the past five years co-produced the Afrofunk Festival, raising musical consciousness among audiences from Seattle to San Diego to raise much-needed funds for education, medical, and health services for East African children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Playing benefit shows, Sila explains is his way to stay connected to other people to remember that it's not only about us but community.

Kenny Washington
New Orleans native Kenny Washington who has jazz, blues and gospel in his blood. With an expressive voice and remarkable scat-singing ability, he's sung around the world with U.S Navy Band, served as featuring vocalist at the Top of the Mark in the Mark Hopkins Hotel for eight years, and is in constant demand as a performer around the Bay Area.
Kenny Washington has thrilled San Francisco jazz audiences with his soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and rapid-fire scatting ever since making his home in the Bay Area. Fans are delighted by this New Orleans native that the San Francisco Chronicle describes as "the Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene, a vocalist with an exuberantly supple tenor that glides effortlessly into the stratosphere." Ravi Coltrane declared Kenny Washington his favorite male vocalist and Mark Murphy told JazzTimes that Washington was the only contemporary male vocalist carrying on the tradition, stating, "Kenny's got the gift."
If you have never heard this New Orleans native sing before, prepare for a jaw dropping experience. Kenny Washington is described as one of "the Bay Area's best kept musical secrets." Emulating the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan while infusing the colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, Washington's astounding improvisational flights, inventive approach and emotional intensity are awe inspiring. Whether scatting up a storm or caressing a Rodgers and Hart ballad, Washington is the kind of performer who leaves the stage with an audience full of new fans. ***** Thursday May 17
Nicolas Bearde Supremely gifted singer-entertainer who is fluent in soul, jazz and R&B styling, Nicholas Bearde has been compared to vocal icons like Lou Rawls, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Jon Lucien. A seasoned and highly respected showman on stage, Bearde's personality and sense of humor, manifest themselves in his expressive ballads and up-tempo tunes, with an engaging rapport that captures and draws the audience into his performance. For the past 20 years, Nicolas has delighted audiences with his vocal acrobatics as a member of Bobby McFerrin's renowned a cappella ensemble, " Voicestra", while carving out his own remarkable solo career style.
With classic stylings and cool interpretations of jazz standards and blues - a sound that one reviewer described as "smooth and buttery", Nicolas is the definitive jazz romantic. Combining his original music with songs from the Great American songbook and hit tunes by an eclectic group of writers such as Burt Bacharach, Rogers and Hart, Duke Ellington and Jon Lucien, Nicolas swings with the best of them and brings a tenderness and delicacy to classic ballads, like no other.
