Greetings!

Loving the Fall tinge in the air and have so much to share with you on the musical front. Many of you know my dear friend, saxophonist Dayna Stephens is in need of a kidney transplant.dayna 1 Last July 4, the Bay Area Jazz community came together to raise funds to offset the anti-rejection medications he will need once the transplant takes place. Recently, Dayna had a set back and it has become apparent that the need for a kidney organ donation sooner than later is what is really needed. While Dayna is now out of the hospital, and playing music - in fact he will have two CD's coming out in 2012, he and his close friends have learned how his system is extremely vulnerable and why the waiting is risky, so we are organizing to try to minimize what has been estimated as a 10 year wait, we hope to cut this time by half- already 2 years have passed, with each day 13 hours of dialysis just to get to the next day, all the while playing amazing music and being a great friend!

While Dayna was in the hospital I reached out to his East Coast friends and community and I was told about the Jazz Foundation. This is an incredible organization that is saving Jazz and Blues...one musician at a time. They have allowed us to receive donations through them in the name of Dayna Stephens to ensure his health services are not interrupted and 100% of the donations will go directly to his medical and living bills as he journeys the path to full health! I would like to share with you a video that his friend Taylor Eigsti produced with a few messages from the people who love and support him. Should you find it in your heart to donate some funds to assist with medications or to get tested for possible kidney donation please click visit www.helpdaynastephens.org to learn more about Dayna and how you can help. From the bottom of my heart thank you to all who have stepped up to help and truly thank you to the Jazz Foundation for caring for the musical community in their toughest times of need.

My dear friend Avotcja informed me today that her friend poet, writer, and storyteller Piri Thomas passed away. Piri was very loved and he inspired many... From Avotcja's announcement:

Born September 30, 1928, in Harlem Hospital, New York City, of a Puerto Rican mother and piri thomasCuban father, his early years were documented in 1967 in his bestselling book, Down These Mean Streets, for which he was best known. He later wrote two other novels, Savior Savior Hold My Hand and Seven Long Times, several plays (The Golden Streets and Ole Ole Oy Vey), a book of short stories (Stories from El Barrio) , many poems, and recorded two CDs of poetry and music (Sounds of the Streets and No Mo' Barrio Blues). Three award-winning films (Petey and Johnny, The World of Piri Thomas, and Every Child is Born a Poet) were made about him. He spoke and performed at countless events at colleges, high schools, middle schools, senior centers, community gatherings, political rallies for peace and justice causes, and many more, while encouraging several generations of young people to be socially responsible in their career choices, and to write and perform poetry, which subsequently birthed the new wave of "spoken word" that has appeared throughout the country. His intuitive grasp of identity, race, and class issues inspired everyone he touched as his ideas were grounded in his moral authority and personal sense of dignity. He was sincere and generous to a fault.

Memorial services are being planned in the Bay Area, New York and Orlando. To learn more about Piri Thomas please click here. My deepest condolences to his friends and loved ones.

Multi-Instrumentalist John Calloway will present The Flute Odyssey featuring seven accomplished flute players who will take the audience down different paths of flute playing that represent various cultures, techniques, and philosophies.

Conventionally, the flute in jazz and popular music has been a doubling or color instrument and not used with the same frequency as other melodic wind instruments such as the saxophone, trumpet or trombone. John Calloway and the Flute Odyssey bring the flute to the forefront and keep it there. Not your traditional flute ensemble evening by any stretch of the imagination!

Featured musicians include:
On Flute: Tim Barsky, Quique Cruz, Mary Fettig, Ken Hawkins, Miguel Martinez, John Carlos Perea, Kenny Stahl, and John Calloway.

Rhythm Section:
Murray Low on Piano
Chris Lopes on Bass
David Flores on Drums

Tony Saunders' long awaited solo CD "Romancing the Bass" on SFRecords will be released Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Yoshi's San Francisco featuring Tony Lindsay, Multi-GRAMMY winning Santana Vocalist and Thiyane Pointer of the Pointer Sisters family along with Fred Ross, Misa Malone, Nikita Germaine, Lissa Paterson on vocals and David McFarland on drums, Thomas "Tasche" Cryer on keyboard, Percy Powell on keyboard, Paul Branin on Guitar and Sax, and of course Tony Saunders on bass!

"Bigger than Outside" on the "Romancing the Bass" CD is a slow-roll soul tune that tests the boundaries of bass playing as we know it in this world. Tony and his Band use the entire fret-board to elicit emotions on a multi-sensory level. Whether you're going up or coming down after hearing this tune you'll be Bigger than Outside!" ~ Jake Feinberg, Host of "The Jake Feinberg Show", KJLL 1330 The JOLT, Tucson, AZ

About Tony Saunders...

Tony Saunders' story could be a script to a hit movie. Son of legendary musician Merl Saunders, Tony's life has been a musical adventure that would be impossible to duplicate. As a child, he was taught piano by Herbie Hancock and for his tenth birthday received an electric organ as a gift from Sly Stone.

Being around his dad, who was part of the Fantasy Records family of artists, he was constantly surrounded by music royalty including record executives Max Weiss and Saul Zaenz. His early influences were Anthony Davis who played with Walter Hawkins, and Lee Miles of Miles Davis fame, "I got to see them both in the studio on a project my dad produced. These guys had a feel that drew me to the bass. That's all I wanted after seeing them."

Tony graduated from the prestigious Conservatory of Music in San Francisco as a piano player, but soon after he started honing his skills on the bass, listening to James Jamison, Stanley Clark, Jack Cassidy and others he knew the bass was going to be his love. Chuck Rainey and John Kahn took interest in Tony and helped him with bass lessons and gave him a legacy to live up to. "In 1967 my dad met Jerry Garcia and boy did my life change." By the time Tony was 18, he played his first gig with Jerry Garcia and his dad Merl in the legendary Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders Band. Tony's musical road has continued on from that era through today. He has played and recorded with musical greats which include: Eric Clapton, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Stevie Wonder, Joe Sample, Chaka Kahn, Ringo Starr, Patti LaBelle, Elton John, The Hawkins Family, and many others! "This just touches the edge of who I have been blessed to play with."

Cigala has one of the most beautiful flamenco voices of our time, a voice of sweetness that flows over everything. When I listen to him, it warms my heart." - Paco De Lucia

"He radiates a magnetic mix of winking charm and unpredictable vitriol reminiscent of a singer from an entirely different milieu, Frank Sinatra."  -The New York Times

Diego el Cigala, Latin-Grammy-winning Gypsy singer from Madrid is a pioneer in fusing flamenco with Latin American music forms such as the bolero, Afro-Caribbean jazz, and tango. His ability to blend different types of contemporary music with traditional flamenco has won him widespread popularity and numerous awards.

He is best known for his 2003 release "Lágrimas Negras" - with Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdés - which was hailed Album of the Year by the New York Times, and received a Latin Grammy. His solo CD "Picasso en mis ojos" won another Latin Grammy in 2006 and featured collaborations with the legendary Paco de Lucía and with Latino jazz greats such as Jerry Gonzalez.

His 2008 project "Dos Lagrimas" features giants of Cuban percussion Tata Guines and Changuito and establishes his ongoing collaboration with guitarist Diego del Morao, pianist Jaime Calabuch "Jumitus", percussionist Sabú Porrina and Cuban bassist Yelsy Heredia.

This year the singer has been nominated for yet another Grammy for his latest album "Cigala & Tango,"  released in 2010 and featuring guest artists from Argentina such as Andrés Calamaro, Néstor Marconi and Pablo Agri.

This will be Cigala's first appearance in the Bay Area and forms part of his first major North American tour (October 20-November 6) which will also include stops in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Vancouver, Toronto and New York City.

I have 3 pairs of tickets to Monday's 8pm show - Tell me why you love the trio to Jazz - be the 3rd, 5th and 7th persons to email me to win!

"One of his generation's most highly regarded drummers ... Matt Slocum is more than a rising star drummer--he is a composer of startling melodic sophistication."  - JazzPolice

"Some of the most exciting piano, bass and drum work you'll hear since E.S.T."  -Jazz Journal UK

"Matt 'gets' Philly Joe Jones and Roy Haynes as good as any drummer I know, and has managed to infuse his drumming with his own style - the man has found his drumming voice and at an early age!" - Peter Erskine

Award winning New York drummer and composer Matt Slocum is quickly emerging as one of the leading double threat jazz artists of his generation. For this CD release performance he will be joined by pianist Sam Yahel (Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell) and bassist Joe Sanders (Terence Blanchard, Geri Allen, Gerald Clayton). Slocum's trio has earned a reputation as one of the premier modern, yet swinging emerging ensembles in jazz today. This year the group is featured throughout North America and Europe. As a composer, Slocum has recently been recognized with composition grants from the American Music Center, the Puffin Foundation, and the Meet the Composer Foundation. He is featured on more than 20 recordings and has performed and/or recorded with artists such as Shelly Berg, Seamus Blake, Alan Broadbent, Steve Cardenas, Bill Cunliffe, Danny Grissett, Taylor Eigsti, Larry Koonse, Lage Lund, Wynton Marsalis, Linda Oh, Alan Pasqua, Jerome Sabbagh, Jaleel Shaw, Walter Smith III, Dayna Stephens, Ben Wendel, Gerald Wiggins, Anthony Wilson and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Frequently referred to as a "musical" drummer, Slocum possesses a uniquely personal voice on the instrument and is a propulsive, melodic and dynamic accompanist and soloist. Few drummers can match his dynamic and textural shading on the instrument, or his ability to shape the inner space of a composition in such a personal, creatively supportive, yet interactive way. While Slocum clearly has a deep understanding of the jazz tradition, his intuitive and interactive musical language on the drums is largely non-derivative and consistently avoids the predictable. And like his counterparts on After the Storm, Slocum's identifiable touch and sound greatly enhances the musical proceedings.
