SAN FRANCISCO, July 11, 2011- On Saturday July 23rd at Campbell Recital Hall, The Stanford Jazz Festival presents Multi-Instrumentalist, Composer and Arranger, John Calloway and the Latin Collective.
The Latin Collective is John Calloway's latest project and features experienced musicians who cover Latin jazz, Cuban as well as other jazz styles. They will be performing original material along with new arrangements of music from Hermeto Pascual, Oliver Nelson, Eddie Palmieri and Celia Cruz! Afro-Cuban to Brazilian to Latin jazz!
A longtime favorite at the Stanford Jazz Festival as well as Jazz Camp and Jazz Residency, multi-instrumentalist John Calloway is a cornerstone of the Bay Area Latin jazz scene. Adept at flute, piano, and percussion, Dr. Calloway has collaborated with a who's-who of Bay Area jazz innovators including Jesus Diaz, Pete Escovedo, Mark Levine, Rebeca Mauleon, Marcus Shelby, and Wayne Wallace, not to mention his essential work as a collaborator and arranger for over three decades with five-time GRAMMY nominee John Santos. Calloway has also performed with such internationally known artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Los Van Van, Orlando "Maraca" Valle, Max Roach, Arturo Sandoval, Omar Sosa, and Israel "Cachao" Lopez. As a writer and performer, John had an essential role on the GRAMMY-nominated recordings of the Machete Ensemble and Ritmo y Candela.
Through his unique compositions and concepts on his two CDs, Diaspora and The Code, John took the flute out of its traditional role as an occasional color tool of lyrical and soft overtones and transformed it into a full-time, front line instrument performed in an aggressive and percussive manner. With his new endeavor, the Latin Collective, Calloway seeks to further push his music and flute playing into new and edgy directions in Latin jazz with influences from Cuba, the Caribbean, Latin America and beyond.
