SAN FRANCISCO, March 9, 2011- San Francisco-based free-form power jazz trio Broun Fellinis are proud to present their 20th Anniversary Season featuring new music, special guest artists, a special release "20 greatest hits" CD, and the sensory-bending, abstract aural artistry of the Broun Fellinis.
The Broun Fellinis (www.brounfellinis.net) have been exploding genres, defying categorization, and blazing artistic trails since their foundation in 1991. They have been described as "Sonny Rollins on crack" (Joel Selvin, The San Francisco Chronicle), "trippy, blissful groove" (Christopher McCann, Musician Magazine), and "distinctive antijazz" (Amanda Nowinski,
Metroactive). Their treatment of familiar holiday musical fare on their 2008 album December was described as "visionary" by Dennis Cook at Jambase, and their uncanny ability to paint abstract sonic landscapes with a relentless groove has thrilled audiences worldwide.
On April 11, 8pm at Yoshi's in San Francisco, Broun Fellinis will present their 20th Anniversary celebration with a 20 Greatest Hits special release CD included with the ticket price for advanced ticket purchasers.
Guest artists include MC Radioactive of Spearhead, Kat Ouano of the Crown City Rockers, Ara Anderson Trumpeter of Tom Waits, devorah major - former Poet Laureate of San Francisco, PC Munoz - Percussionist / Poet of Talkinghouse Productions, and Deadeyes Black Futurist painting live graffiti art.
Formed 1991 in San Francisco by Kevin Carnes, drums/sampler (Beatnigs, UAF), David Boyce, tenor/soprano saxophone, efx, synth, spoken word, and Kirk Peterson, electric bass. The Broun Fellinis play a soulful and aggressive style of post modern improvised/composed jazzical sound that is informed by dub, afro beat, abstract funk, drum'n'bass, hardcore/psych /prog rock and film soundtracks (the darker and more atmospheric the better) The group has been profiled on NPR in the US and on Radio Nova in France. They've traveled to Spain to perform at the San Sebastian International Jazz Festival and to British Columbia for the du Maurier festival. Other festival appearances include the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Stern Grove Festival in SF, the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle and more. Broun Fellinis have toured with Ben Harper and performed with many greats such as The Last Poets, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Meshell Ndegeocello, Living Colour, Erykah Badu, the Roots, Mos Def, Gil Scott-Heron, Zakir Hussain, Bernie Worrell, George Clinton, Jimmy Smith, Les Claypool, Aceyalone, Mikah 9, Antibalas, Blackalicious, General Public, Ravi Coltrane, and more.
