SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 22, 2010 - Urban Music Presents is proud to announce Teena Marie Birthday Tribute with 6 Piece & a Biscuit!
With the passing of Teena Marie leaving a huge gap in the hearts and ears of funk fans globally, 6PB took action, immediately paying tribute to a standing room only crowd at Q's Lounge and a packed house at The Mitchell Katz Winery. The response was so overwhelming; it became obvious there was a call to answer. Ashling "Biscuit" Cole created, "It Must Be Magic", a 90-minute showcase paying homage to Teena Marie in song and spirit. Biscuit embodies, quite naturally the charisma and passion of Lady T and as soon as she hits the stage you will agree, no one is more qualified and ready to accept the passing of the torch. Don't miss the chance to catch this tribute at Yoshi's San Francisco on March 7th, 2 days after what would've been her 55th birthday. Come see what the "Magic" is all about!
"6 Piece & a Biscuit" consists of the finest group of funksters the Bay Area has to offer including members of Graham Central Station, ConFunkShun, Tower of Power, and that's only the rhythm section! The lead singer Ashling Cole, affectionately known as "Biscuit" by her fans, has been wowing crowds topping 60,000 with her sensational range and electrifying stage presence. She has been compared to Chaka Khan and Tina Turner, and now as if somehow reincarnating Lady T, Biscuit is harnessing her incredible gift and presenting, "It Must be Magic", featuring the most genuine, heartfelt renditions of Teena Marie's music anyone has ever heard. She gets the crowd on their feet with "Square Biz" and "I Need Your Lovin". About Ashling Cole...
Ashling Cole, or as her adoring fans call her - "BISCUIT" is one of the most dynamic vocalists the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. Her soaring voice and unparalleled professionalism make her a first call talent in the arena of R&B, funk and gospel.
This past year, Biscuit spent most of her time performing and touring with legendary bassist, Larry Graham and Graham Central Station. GCS has been on tour in Europe since April 2010, with a weeklong stint in Japan to boot. Highlights included music festivals in France and Belgium, opening for Prince for crowds topping 60,000. This past December, a taste of the European festival experience was brought Stateside, as Biscuit with Graham Central Station played to a sold out house at Madison Square Garden for Prince's "Welcome 2 America" Tour. Needless to say, this exposure is expanding Biscuit's brand far beyond the Bay Area. The world is quickly finding out what we already know around these parts - that Biscuit is a star! As a follow up to a successful year, Graham Central Station is back home opening for Prince at The Oracle Arena in Oakland on none other than Biscuit's birthday...Monday, February 21. GCS has a new album in the works and is scheduled to appear at Yoshi's SF on April 8th & 9th.
With the passing of Teena Marie leaving a huge gap in the hearts and ears of funk fans globally, Biscuit's tribute to Lady T stems from a lifelong admiration and appreciation for soul music's most innovative underdogs. Biscuit embodies, quite naturally the charisma and passion of Lady T and as soon as she hits the stage you will agree, no one is more qualified and ready to accept the passing of this torch.
About the Band...
Early last year, members of 6 Piece & a Biscuit were invited by Larry Graham to join Graham Central Station and have been performing with the legendary bassist ever since. GCS has been on a world tour since April 2010. Highlights include appearances at Billboard Live in Tokyo and Osaka with Marcus Miller, headlining the Istanbul International Jazz Festival, and joining forces with Mint Condition in France and Belgium, opening for Prince. This past December, GCS played to a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden for Prince's "Welcome 2 America" Tour. Needless to say, this exposure is expanding 6PB's brand far beyond the Bay Area. The world is quickly finding out what we already know around these parts - San Francisco and Oakland are still breeding grounds for world-class musicians.
Founders Wilton Rabb and Eric Daniels grew up in Oakland playing music together. Dissatisfied with the way things were going on the scene, they decided to form a "cover band" that would play the good stuff folks were longing to hear, and vowed to never play another version of Brick House again! They joined forces with Jimmy McKinney and Dave Council, also both from Oakland. They had all worked at one time or another with power vocalist Ashling Cole, and invited her to represent the band as their lead vocalist, along with drummer Brian Braziel. Finally, bassist Eric "EQ" Young, who was a stand-in for Larry Graham in rehearsals for the 2010 world tour, was a natural fit to complete this super group. Now, what would we call this group of 7? Greasy, gritty, full of flavor, satisfying, and tasty...we shall call them 6 Piece & a Biscuit.
As a follow up to a successful year, Graham Central Station was featured on "Way Black When", TV-ONE's series to celebrate Black History Month and is back home in the Bay Area to open for Prince's "Welcome 2 America" tour again, this time at The Oracle Arena in Oakland on none other than Biscuit's birthday...Monday, February 21 at 8pm. GCS will also be at Yoshi's SF April 8th & 9th gearing up for a much anticipated album release slated for later in 2011.
