Two fabulous opportunities to see the incomparable Cuban Tres Guitar Master, Tito Gonzalez and his band, Tito y su Son de Cuba. They will be performing this Thursday, January 13 at the beautiful Uptown venue on Telegraph in Oakland and again on Saturday February 5 at La Pena Cultural Center!
Tito Gonzalez will also be offering a Cuban Music Workshop at The Jazzschool in Berkeley on Sunday January 23 from 2 - 4. The workshop will cover the Tres and Minor Percussion! This is an amazing opportunity to learn from a true Master of traditional Cuban Son!
About the Workshop... Come meet the Cuban Tres and get a taste of the minor percussion instruments associated with Afro-Cuban rhythms. The Cuban Tres is a guitar-like instrument with three double strings (six in all). It plays a key role in the Cuban "son," the heartbeat of salsa. The minor percussion instruments include the maracas, guiro (gourd scraper) and clave sticks. Learn how these instruments weave together to create the rich polyrhythms of Afro-Cuban music. This workshop includes an explanation and hands-on demonstration of the Cuban Tres, and a demonstration of the techniques used in playing claves, maracas and guiro. Time permitting: a descarga (jam session) with all of the instruments. This workshop is open to all musicians.

About Tito y su Son de Cuba... ... Bringing our own unique, innovative sounds, we will take you back to the old Cuba, interpreting and redefining classic Cuban Son at its best! Tito y su Son de Cuba blends our traditional Cuban music: chachacha, son montuno, guaracha, bolero, danzon; with many other worldwide known styles: bossa nova and latin jazz; resulting in a, sometimes relaxing and other times a burst of energy and dancing vibe; moving the beat as the ambience demands. The inclusion of the Cuban Tres Guitar makes this traditional Cuban music come to life! Son is the most popular style of music to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to today's salsa music!
About Tito Gonzalez...
Heriberto "Tito" Gonzalez, "El Trecero mayor", arrived in the San Francisco Bay area in the summer of 2000 and has been performing in the Bay Area to sold out audiences ever since!
Tito is a master Tres Guitar muisican! He studied with Tres master Papi Oviedo of the Buena Vista Social Club and then with the greatest guitarist in Cuba, Octavio Sanchez Cotán. He has played with such famous Cuban groups as Conjunto Estrellas de Chocolate, Aribu Quartet and Chapotin y sus estrellas, all from Havana, Cuba.
Before leaving Havana, Tito founded and played with the Nuevo Conjunto de Arsenio Rodriguez, a group carefully structured to represent the music of the famous Cuban tresero Arsenio Rodriguez. This group was assembled by Arsenio's daugther, Regla Rodriguez Travieso. She thought long and hard as to who should represent and play her father's music. She chose Heriberto "Tito" Gonzalez, a great honor for him!
Since his arrival here in the USA he has had the honor of playing with such greats as Oscar De Leon, Larry Harlow and Orestes Vilato to name a few. Tito has played his authentic high energy Cuban music on such great stages as the world renowned Yoshi's in San Francisco and Oakland, Ca. Tito also plays internationally and he was recently requested to play for the Kings Coronation on the Island of Tonga!
Tito also teaches students privately how to play the incredible Cuban Tres!
