Conventionally, the flute in jazz and popular music has been a doubling
or color instrument and not used with the same frequency as other
melodic wind instruments such as the saxophone, trumpet or trombone. John Calloway
and the Flute Odyssey bring the flute to the forefront and keep it
there. Eight accomplished flute players take us down different paths of
flute playing that represent various cultures, techniques, and
philosophies. Not your traditional flute ensemble evening by any
stretch of the imagination!

John Calloway is a
multi-instrumentalist who has performed with many renowned jazz and
Latin music artists throughout the United States, Europe and Latin
America, among them: Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Max Roach, Omar Sosa, Jesus
Diaz and John Santos. His recording credits
include two CDs with his own ensemble, "Diaspora" and "The Code," along
with the Grammy nominated CDs "SF Bay," "Ritmo y Candela" and Ritmo y
Candela II. John has a Doctorate in
International and Multicultural education from the University of San
Francisco and is on faculty at San Francisco State University, and at
the Jazz School in Berkeley, CA.
