You've Got the Power!
One of the questions we're most frequently asked is why the firefly is located in Effingham. The answer is multi-faceted, and it may surprise most of our readers. Effingham offered us a variety of opportunities: to bring sustainable and organic foods to diners; to practice and market a lifestyle that we deeply believe in; and to own a small business that would support other small businesses and ultimately, contribute to the economic growth of an area dear to Kristie's heart.
Coming from the world of big business and finance, the ability to contribute to economic growth was as important to Kristie as Niall's commitment to creating a dining experience. What we didn't realize was that by doing this, we were at the forefront of the locavore movement. Every time you dine at the firefly you're contributing to the growth of small businesses, many of them within 100-miles. From Nuxoll's to Schottman's, Paw-Paw Farms to Zimmerman's, from Cecil's Window Washing to linen service to Alwerdt's Gardens and Lyon's Fisheries, our business supports their business. And it all comes from you.
Last Saturday was the first Small Business Saturday, a national campaign to encourage shoppers to support small businesses. It's a movement to reinvest our money close to home, in the businesses that are "the heartbeat of our communities and local economies," according to the movement's Facebook page. In the same vein, our friends over at Agracel sent us information on the 3/50 Project, an idea posted on a blog that has blossomed into a full-blown, locavore movement. It's a simple idea...spending $50 a month at three local businesses could be enough to preserve and restore local economies. 3 - What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared? Stop in. Say hello. Pick up something that brings a smile. Your purchases are what keep those businesses around. 50 - If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. Imagine the positive impact if ¾ of the employed population did that. 68 - For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays local. Spend it online and nothing comes home. 1 - The number of people it takes to start the trend - you! |

'Twas the night before...
Christmas and all through the town, people were stirring, the cinnamon ground. At the firefly they dined, the room all aglow,as they chatted and ate and bade others hello, the waitstaff poured chenin blancs and reds,as guests enjoyed apps, dinner and breads...Good thing we run a restaurant instead of write poetry! What we're trying to say is that this Christmas Eve, the firefly is open for business! On the days surrounding Thanksgiving we were thrilled to have so many of you bring your extended families in for lunch and dinner. It was great to see the familiar faces of kids home from college, in-laws from out of state and those people who pass through just a couple of times a year. We feel like we've become a family gathering spot, and we love it! So we've decided that this year, we're going to give staying open on Christmas Eve and New Year's Day a try. We're still creating the menu and promise it will be extra special. And since you can't be home baking if you're eating with us at the firefly, we'll send home some cookies for Santa with you! That way there's no chance he'll miss your house! In fact, maybe it's some added incentive for him to come by... Please let us know what you think of our idea, and we certainly would appreciate reservations if you plan on joining us for dinner! 217-342-2002

We have several things we'd like to let you know about coming up in January:
- On Saturday, January 22 we'll host Wellness day with the CEO students.
- The firefly has been invited to participate in the 14th Annual Fairmont Hotel and Resorts Grand Chefs Gala/Jean Banchet Awards for Culinary Excellence in Chicago. Held on Friday January 28th, the Grand Chefs Gala brings together Chicago's finest chefs to prepare and present their signature dishes for over 500 guests to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event will feature delectable foods, stunning décor, and premium silent and live auction items. Tickets are still available and it would be great to get some more fireflies to attend.
You can stay up to date with all the latest news and buzz about the event by following them on Twitter @GrandChefsGala. Click here for information.
- firefly will be hosting a VERY special upscale Truffle Dinner on Saturday Feb. 5th paired with hard-to-find wines from around the world. Because the wines are so special, we will only be allocated a small amount, making the tickets to this event very limited.
Chef is putting the final touches on the menu and Chris Rutter from Koerner is calling in favors to get his hands on these amazing wines. This will be an all-inclusive evening of fine dining and spirits, the perfect gift for hard to buy friends who have everything. Please let us know if you are interested and we will be happy to reserve a ticket for you!
Happy Holidays to all and thank you for your patronage!
Sincerely, Kristie & Niall Campbell firefly grill |

Drink of the Month!
In the spirit of the holidays, this month we're bringing you two drinks of the month! Giving you one more way to ring in the holiday season! For those who like it hot, we have a great seasonal choice - Hot Buttered Rum, using Okaw Valley Apple Cider! Cider, and the spices that just scream Christmas, clove, cinammon and nutmeg. Served in a mug with a dollop of butter on top and a cinammon stick, it's sure to put you in the holiday mood!
And for those who like it cold, we have a White Christmas drink for you - Rosemary & Bing!

A tasty blend of premium vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Cherry Heering Brandy, grapefruit juice and a bit of muddled rosemary. Served over ice, topped with dry champagne, garnished with a Rosemary sprig and a cherry - it will have you crooning like Bing!
Both drinks are on special this month at the firefly, stop in and try one out!
