When you least expect it...

Like many people, we're always amazed at what a small world it is.  And we're always more amazed at who we see here in Effingham when we talk to the people who are passing through.  There are presidents and CEO's of major corporations.  There are performers and actors and artists traveling from one gig to the next.  There are politicians, major sports figures and sports teams.  We never know who is going to walk through our door next and we never fail to be surprised.

Niall & Kristie MEHowever we're not used to it happening to us when we're outside of Effingham.  Last month we returned to Maine to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary.  It was an incredible weekend.  The weather was perfect, the lobster bake was luscious, everyone had a great time, it was just an amazing event and a great way to celebrate five years!

Following the party we trekked across to Rockland  to spend a few days offshore at Goose Rocks lighthouse. Yep, a real lighthouse.  An 1890-built lighthouse.  With no modern conveniences!  Located in Fox Island waterway between New Haven and Vinalhaven, Maine, Goose Rocks is a 51-foot spark plug Niall Kristie Lighthouseor coffeepot design cast iron offshore lighthouse that is partially sustained by "Keeper Stays" a.k.a. overnight visitors. It's accessed via private boat out of Rockland, which is accessed via ferry.  So as we're hustling over to the ferry, we did a double-take, spotting a familiar face...Richard from the Oak Ridge Boys! Needless to say we passed on that particular ferry, choosing instead to hang out for a few hours with the boys...who would've thought?

The Goose Rocks experience was also incredible. Days spent with good friends, in a very small space, with no television, no cell phones, no computers, and no running water.  We just unplugged and relaxed, and of course, we ate.  Despite the lack of water, refrigerator or electric lights, Niall was able to create feasts via cooler, grill, and the old-fashioned water via bucket method.  For us, it was the perfect way to de-stress, unwind, and get away from all the hustle and bustle for just a little while. We highly recommend it!

Green Thumbs at the firefly

Master GardenerLast month green thumbs from around the state descended upon Effingham for their 2009 Annual Master Gardener Conference.  For three days participants toured local gardens, farms and wineries and attended educational sessions on a variety of garden-related topics.  One of the most popular sessions was the firefly's Taste the Difference of Farm and Table, which was the first program to sell out!

Kristie and Niall toured the group through the firefly and explained how the restaurant hums.  Then they walked the gardNiall cooking demoen, examining (yes, these folks have a keen eye) the heirloom tomatoes, multitudes of different types of peppers, and all of the unique veggies growing like Asian Long Beans and 8-Ball Squash, varieties that were new to many of the gardeners.  Then Niall put on his apron and demonstrated how to cook with herbs and vegetables, dispersing a few tricks of the trade as well. Along the way they discussed how to prepare, and take advantage of, seasonal foods and how to make sustainable choices.

Mgardeners toastingWe really enjoyed having such an enthusiastic, eager-to-learn group spend time at the firefly. We're always happy to share our knowledge, a beautiful late summer day, and of course, our love of food with others.  But this group was extra-special as they're more discerning than most.  All of them know more about gardening than we do (precisely why we have Nick from Alwerdt's research and tend to the firefly garden), and that can be a little intimidating.  We know food - how to choose it, how to chop it, how to prepare and cook it - but we have to admit that we don't know all the ins and outs of growing it.  So we were especially tickled by the after-event feedback we received saying that this was the best program that some of the Master Gardeners have ever attended.  That type of feedback, is, well, just priceless!

Here at the firefly grill we're always trying to bring new tastes and experiences to our patrons. And part of the fun for us is coming up with seasonal events that, well, match the mood of our surroundings.  So this month, In the spirit of Oktoberfest, we'll  be hosting an artisan beer tasting.

On Friday, October 23rd  Koerner Distribuabbey ale tastingting's resident beer expert will bring you on a journey through six craft-brewed, artisanally-produced  beers - Sierra Nevada Kellewise, North Coast Scrimshaw, Founders Dirty Bastard, New Belgium Abbey Ale, North Coast Scrimshaw and Bell's Amber Ale - which will be paired with six small bites.  It's $25 per person, reservation only and limited to 50 people, so please call today to reserve your spot, 217-342-2002. More details at www.ffgrill.com and in the next issue of the firefly Flash.

Thanks for your continued support of the firefly!

Sincerely,

Kristie & Niall Campbell

We're Talking Turkey...

We don't mean to scare anyone but it is October, and that means November is just around the corner. And we'd like to make a suggestion.

This year, try a turkey from the firefly grill.  Ours are Amish free-range, organic turkeys. They're fresh, they're young, they're tender and succulent, and oh so delicious!

We have all the goodies that go along with it too...Niall's stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes and dessert, available either family style or a la carte.

Book your turkey dinner by November 10 and receive a $15 gift certificate  towards a future purchase.  Call to order, 342-2002 or visit the website for the complete menu.
