Great Keynotes! Each day, we'll have a morning and afternoon keynote address from one of the leading K-12 PE Experts in the United States. These include:
Standards-Based Student Assessment: Choose It & Use It Wisely! As the Nike phrase "just do it" inspires us into action, the standards-based movement has inspired a rush to action as well. While we've written curriculum standards and are aligning student assessments with those standards, we need to do more than "just do it" in assessing student learning. We need to use the student assessment data obtained to constantly improve our programs and to create "raving fans" in the community. This presentation will focus on using student assessment data for program improvement with positive public relations! Dr. Dolly Lambdin
University of Texas Visionary Physical Education: PE on a Mission! With over 345,000 K-12 students, Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the fourth largest school district in the United States. As you can imagine, developing a comprehensive K-12 physical educa- tion program is no easy task for a distrcit this size. See how this dramatic change toward a visionary physical education program has taken place, how to partner with community groups, and get the "buy-in" from teachers and administrators. Dr. Jayne Greenberg Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Florida
The United States Physical Education Test What are the components of the United States Physical Education Test (USPET) for elementary school? Middle school? High school? How does USPET align with national and state standards? What evidence does USPET provide to convince parents, administrators and legislators of the value and importance of K-12 physical education? How is the future of K-12 physical education linked to USPET? Is there anyway to observe physical educators to know if they are aligning their programs with the standardized USPET regulations and guidelines?
Dr. George Graham CEO of PE Central
Changing the Way of Doing BusinessJoin us for an insightful keynote as Judy LoBianco shares her thoughts on the important strides her K-12 physical education teachers are making in developing a "new way of doing business" at the school and district levels. Her work at South Orange-Maplewood Schools has received state and national recognition from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and NASPE as well. Judy LoBianco South Orange-Maplewood Schools, New Jersey
Can We Make the Change Toward Skill Attainment? It is universally accepted that skill development comprises the major core of a sound instructional K-12 physical education program. In order to meet this charge, there are a variety of much-needed changes that every physical education teacher needs to consider when designing lessons and activities. Learn more about the "Best Practices" for greater student skill attainment. Dr. Stevie Chepko Winthrop University, South Carolina Recipes for Preserving Infrastructure Success: Why Sugar Works Better than Salt For the past five years, Lincoln Public Schools' physical education teachers have participated in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Four crucial questions drive the focus on student learning in a PLC: (1) What do we want each student to learn? (2) How will we know when each student has learned it? (3) How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning? (4) How will we respond when a student already knows it? This session will describe the process by which LPS elementary physical education teachers work in their PLCs to create common formative assessments within a standards-based curriculum to improve student learning. Dr. Marybell Avery Lincoln Public Schools, NebraskaDoes Teacher Attitude Really Matter? What role does a physical educator's attitude (i.e., positive or indifferent) play in creating a successful K-12 learning environment of children and youth? Learn more about the impact of teacher behavior on student growth and achievement in physical education. With over 40 years of practical and research-based experience, Dr. Pangrazi's "words of wisdom" will inspire and motivate listeners. Dr. Bob Pangrazi Arizona State University Navigating the Waves of ChangeLearn how student assessment can have dramatic effects on your K-12 physical education program. The focus of today's keynote will reflect the results of implementing standard-based education at the district level. For example, more and more physical educators now see the impact on student learning, increased value for PE, and greater student achievement. Video clips, activities, tools, and strategies for instruction and assessment. Ginny Popiolek Harford County Public School, Maryland
Laughing is a Lifetime Sport Is there anything better that a contagious giggle that you can't control? Join us as we enjoy a lap or two of "internal jogging!" Laughter can lower blood pressure, reduce your body's level of stress hormones, defend against infections, and increase memory and learning. Did you know that humor is also an "instant activity?" In less than a half-second of hearing a funny story, the left hemisphere of the brain analyzes the words and structure of the joke, your right hemisphere "gets" the punch line, the visual sensory area of your occipital lobe creates images, your limbic system (emotional) makes you happier, and your motor cortex delivers a smile. Let the laughter begin! Paula Hudson Hildebrand
